All if this brings an important question to mind that hasn't really been answered publically -- Who's choice was it really to go with football only ??

Was it ECU's choice? Maybe due to finances and greater travel expenses for all other sports. I agree that all these sports would be better served with a more "regional" conference. Should they stay with CUSA or maybe even more regional to a lesser conference but also less travel expenses.

Was the football only choice strictly from the Big East ?? Was Football all they wanted from ECU ?? Maybe they didn't want to share revenue with all the other sports because they knew ECU wouldn't really add much of anything with those other sports to the conference.

All in all, it doesn't really make much sense on either end. And the question still looms on who made that decision and why. I mean, ECU is not Notre Dame and can call our own shots with negotiations. From all that I have seen and read, it seems to me that the Big East made that choice for ECU. But, at least we have our foot in the door to something better than CUSA in football.

You saw above where I asked this question too. I can't figure it out either so I looked to a bunch of Big East blogs and 99 of 100 read as this one that I have cut and pasted here:

Time for the basketball schools to leave. Pick up George Mason, VCU, Xavier, Butler, UMASS, Richmond, and a Dayton and a few others and you have yourself a better A-10 that is very competitive.

What I am beginning to wonder about is why the non-football schools in the Big East want to continue to be a part of it. They have now lost West Virginia, Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Louisville. They have added Temple, Central Florida, SMU, Houston, Memphis and Tulane. That's not much of a bargain.

I don't think that's what Villanova, Georgetown, St John's, Providence and Seton Hall had in mind when they signed on.

I'm not sure that going to the BE for baseball isn't a drop to a lower status.

Good point. The only pluses that I see are the increased revenue through basketball, and I think there would be a fair amount of fans that would be sad to see baseball dropped to a lesser status.

I'm not sure why the Pirates would want to have any of their other sports with the Big East except basketball. And they would want that for revenue sharing only, because competitively they would be outclassed severely.

I think they would be far better served to try to get into a regional conference for their olympic sports.

Is it possible that when UCONN moves to the ACC the Pirates could move into that all sports spot?

    — Posted by lazydawg58

Looked into this some more and with all of their revenue producing basketball only schools it seems unlikely. Why, if ECU will allow it, would they add a slice to this pie? However, because their BB does produce significant revenue (by basketball measures) it would be ENORMOUS if ECU could grab a slice of that pie considering that I doubt that ECU bball is much of a revenue producer at the moment. Best I can tell it would add between 2 and 3 million dollars yearly in revenue in 2014. Just cannot see why they would do it when they have you now without it.

Hokie, I don't know any more than anybody else. I've speculated on a number of scenarios, but that's all it is - speculation. I see where Bubba Cunningham said tonight that UNC wasn't going anywhere. I'm sure he means that. Today. But things can change by tomorrow.

If the SEC poached a couple of ACC teams to get to 16, he'd have a tough time saying no if the B1G made them an offer. I assume they haven't yet, or we'd have heard about it. I just don't see the SEC going to the west again. Other than Oklahoma and Texas, I'm not sure there's anybody worth taking out of the Big XII. They could have had West Virginia for the asking, but they didn't ask. If they want to expand their footprint, Va Tech is a likely target. I think Weaver confirmed that there was at least some interest expressed on the SEC's part.

While North Carolina (the state, not the team) also fits the geographical bill, I don't think UNC would go anywhere except the B1G. And if the choice comes down to State or Miami, I'd guess Miami would be the more likely. They are further away from any SEC team than any ACC team south of Pittsburgh, and they are in a large TV market. More to the point, they draw a national TV audience.

Right now, the ACC is more fragile than seemed possible just a few weeks ago. It won't take much to blow it up.

Anything is possible I guess but they have revenue creating basketball teams and they do not want to cut you in. I am sure that ECU fought for all sports as hard as they could but couldn't pull it off. Still an upgrade in the long run.
