ECU to the Big East...and what it may mean

My first question is will ECU continue to try and play UNC,VT, and SC in their schedule? Holland said today that they would have to look at it. I wonder what the reaction would be if some or all of these games left the schedule?

Holland also said that "they did not really have a choice" but to join the BE. I assume that this is a reference to finances. Could be interpreted multiple ways though.

Also stated was that to go into the BE in football only was the only option that was presented to them.

I think it depends on after it's all said and done -- what teams are going to be left in the Big East. Are they going to be loaded with Top 25 caliber teams -- I don't think so. It's mainly going to be a reconstructed CUSA conference. Therefore, even winning the Big East may not be impressive enough to make the Top 25 list -- which should be our goal from now on.

I think it will still take playing some of the top teams (AQ-BCS)and actually WINNING a few before ECU will be able to break into that level of competetion and respectability. Therefore, I feel it will still be neccessary to schedule these outside of the conference games. This has always been ECU's game plan for actual success -- win the conference games and ocassionally beat or upset the good team. I don't see that plan changing even in the Big East. I truly feel that ECU will be missing a great opportunity both in fans and respectability if they scale back on their scheduling of quality opponets outside the conference.

Well for the record if I had to guess I would say that the most likely make-up of the BE in 2014 would be this (for football):

UCF, Cincy, Hou, Memphis, Prov, Sou. Fla., SMU, Temple, ECU, and Tulane.

Could be that if ACC implodes a few decent teams could be added.

Could be that if there are larger conference explosions that one or two of these teams could be absent.

This conference is better than it looks on paper in a way though as the new TV deals are larger now that they are marketed and sold in the current system. So I would expect even this deja-vu conference would pay better than it once did.

BTW Mid Ten. and one other Sun Belt school to conference usa today. See? Has to be good to be gone.

There is some speculation on some of the boards that ECU will get an all sport invite to take the Louisville spot, then add an east coast non-football, and a western football only. Anybody hearing anything?

That is what I am hearing, especially if the ACC takes UConn or Cincy, but there has to be one more ACC defection for that to happen. I am not sure that will happen. That is why we have not joined the CAA yet. Although, I would hope that Terry would get us into A-10 to be part of a better basketball conference.
