Just heard that the seven schools held a conference call this morning with Aresco and informed him of their intention of leaving. I just realized that this means ECU will have no problem getting all sports into whatever this conference becomes.

My question is why would they want to play their other sports against the football schools of the BE? I suppose I could see wanting to cash in on the potential tournament revenue UConn, Temple, Cincy and Memphis might earn, but outside of this I don't really see any reason why the Pirates would want to be in a league with SMU or Houston for their so called "Olympic sports".

For that matter, why would UConn want that, either? They are 1700 miles from SMU and 1780 miles from Houston. I think they should all seek to make it a football only league.

UConn does not want it. They have been fighting likr hrck to get out of the Big East. Allegedly, they sent an audition tape to the ACC right before they took Louisville.

I have not really looked into they quality of the other schools in Olympic sports, but I would think that playing these other schools in bball would be better than the current group. UConn is only one vote. I wonder how the other schools would vote? The real question is are they doing this by voting to dissolve the conference or not? Are they leaving the Big East name to CUSA V2.1 or not? How much of the contract money will be available to this conference? We don't know yet.

Another thing that just hit me is why would they want ECU now? No holes to fill. No increased contract. No conference to keep happy and hold together. What is to stop CUSA V2.1 from backtracking the invite or not allowing the olympic sports in just to make this move more unprofitable for ECU?

Maybe every school east of the Mississippi not already in the ACC, SEC or B1G just becomes a free agent, and starts from scratch to cobble together a new conference.

One of the things this does is it takes away the last bit of leverage schools like UConn and Cincy may have had to strike a better deal.

If you are going to wind up in a conference that isn't going to get a decent TV contract anyway, you might as well create one that makes some sort of geographical sense. I kind of like something like this:

ECU, Temple, Navy, Old Dominion, Charlotte, Georgia Southern, Western KY and Middle Tennessee. That's compact enough for all sports, and not many obvious competitive mismatches.

Are some of those schools are FBS? Charlotte? Am I behind the times?

What you suggest makes sense to me. With the absence of a BCS automatic bid or any real increased revenue, why not get more regional schedule that people could travel to see? Interesting.

Georgia Southern, ODU and Charlotte are currently FCS, planning (in ODU and Charlotte's case, committed) to moving up in class. Charlotte and ODU are currently slated to join CUSA. No sooner did ECU get two regional teams in their league they bolted for the BE. Karma, anyone?

Edit: Actually, Charlotte isn't so much FCS as they are transitioning directly from having no team at all to the FBS with CUSA. I don't know of any other school that has ever done this.
