Well said. The ding on Coach Ruffin is just that, he hasn't beaten upper-tiered teams since year 1, but I think that is directly correlated to being too much of a friend to Brian Mitchell. I can't help to think about all those games against talented/bowl-bound teams that we lost due to meltdowns on the defensive side of the ball. Obviously you can't put all the blame for losses on one player/coach, but giving up loads of points certainly puts enormous pressure on everyone else to outperform.

-Being too loyal appears to be his biggest flaw, but I believe it's also one of his strengths too.

I don't necessarily agree with you saying that Coach Ruff can win. He hasn't beaten a team with a winning record since his first year. We have beaten up on a bunch of losers that last two years. This is the make or break season for Ruff in my book. If he wins CUSA and can win 1 or 2 of the three ACC teams we are playing this year, then I will be at peace with him at the helm.

He did what he needed to do by letting his long time friend Brian Mitchell go as DC. I know that was hard. He hired a great DC in Rick Smith. I think we have all the makings for no less than an 8 win season and potentially an 11 win year. There are a lot of Pirate fans that have high expectations this year because we have been very patient and the talent and coaches are there. We all believe that this could be a break out year for Pirate Football. I am confident that this is Coach Ruff's year. However, if we have another subpar year the disappointment will send a lot of fans and supporters away which will not bode well for him in the long term.

This is a statement year for him to make us a winner that beats good teams and puts the legacy of Skip Holtz in the rear view mirror.

haha, thanks but no thanks, check both of those off b/c we have a coach and we've found a new conference already. Coach Ruffin has shown he can lead, mentor young men, fundraise, and win games.

The offense is clearly there (the article points that out) however, he has lacked in the defensive portion of the game, but with Rick Smith on board again hopefully that will change.

Put it this way: With a potent offense in the air AND on the ground (1k rusher last season) plus a decent/consistent defense should lead to a very successful year for us.

They should get a new coach and also find a new conference. We would love for them to replace NC State in the ACC!

Very well written article about the Pirates...ranking them #50. I definitely agree with the expectation of at least 8wins with a showdown with Marshall to decide the East crown.

    GO PIRATES!
