What do you think about Lincoln Riley?

A lot of people have been complaining about the offense. In defense of Lincoln I know that we don't run the air raid offense. I also know that VT has one of the best defenses in the country this year. Bud Foster knows what he is doing and he has the talent to do it.

Do you think there needs to be a change of the Offensive Coordinator? I don't believe that Lincoln has ever been mentored, (especially much by Leach) so I think it has been on the job training for him. I have found that the best OC's started out as grad assistants, then moved up to a position coach, then moved up to an asst. coordinator, then jumped up to Offensive Coordinator. They got to learn from others more knowledgible then they and grew in wisdom in each year. Lincoln essentially went from a grad asst. to a full fledged Offensive Coordinator. he didn't have anyone to help develop him as Leach ran the offense by himself.

    Thoughts?

I do think it is time for a change. Yes, they had a 1,000+ yd. rusher last year and everything else, but all he knows how to do is pass, pass, pass. The rushing, etc. was against weak conf. teams. It appeared like he got all panicked last Saturday, even after it was shown mixing in running plays was working against VT and he continued to call pass plays. In the ever weak Conf. USA, right now ECU is a bit better and makes the offensive calling look good, but once it is pressed up against better defense's, esp. man coverage it is all halted. Riley is not cut out for this level at this time. If he could get some training, then maybe.
It is just disappointing to see the defense hold up their end and Riley fail to convert on the many chances last Saturday. IMO, I wish the whole coaching staff would be let go, but the AD has given Ruffin a long extention......????? But, in typical ECU style, EVERY time we get a coach that is progressing forward ECU let's them get away. 21-20 career at ECU is what Ruffin is sporting, and with the next two ACC games it is going to be embarrassing. IF UNC does not beat ECU by 17 it will be shocking. At this rate, I will not have to spend money on season tickets and I think more folks will fall into the fold of getting fed up with this lack of offense.

I'm still miffed as to why we were trying to pass out of the endzone at the end of the game knowing that the DBs had pretty much shut us down. Big question mark on that one. I'm excited though. Could be too that we did not want to show much this early in the year. I know a couple of OCs and they say that.

what I'm worried about is we seem to always mail it in against UNC. Last year it just seemed like we were VERY conservative in play calling. I mean, what have we got to lose?? (just my two cents.)

I am thinking that Ruff may have to make a hard change at the end of the year like he did with Mitchell. If the offense gets shut down by UNC, State then that pretty much seals the deal for me. Neither have very good defenses, so if they shine that means Riley is the problem. I have noticed how he can't seem to make adjustments against the better teams. Against weak teams our offense looks great. Against stiff competition it tends to implode. If they get rid of Riley, then that will just about get rid of every person Ruff brought over from Texas Tech, which says a lot to me.

The whole program is growing stagnate with this coach there. I hope the AD is starting to see this.

My thoughts are that players win games, and better players win more games. I don't believe the most recent round of conference realignments was kind to ECU. The bottom line was that the power conferences got stronger, and the rest got weaker. In the process, the power conferences got an even bigger recruiting advantage than they enjoyed before. I think that recruits were already factoring that result into their thinking about their choice of schools before the dust settled, and schools like ECU now have an even bigger talent gap than usual.

Right now, I'm only prepared to judge a coach based on how he does against his peers - and in ECU's case, that's not VT, UNC or State. You could let Riley go, or just demote him to position coach (which is probably where he belongs experience wise), but I'm not sure in the current FBS landscape the Pirates are going to attract anybody significantly better.

I agree with you Ken. it is not only talented players that the BCS has taken away, but talented coaches. Our old DC that was fired was hired as a position coach at WVU. (Before I continue I must comment that this supports even more than ever that Holgerson is a bad coach and won't last much longer at WVU). Anyway, Mitchell is making double as a position coach at WVU than he made as a Defensive Coordinator at ECU. The BCS created a big money gap that we can't compete with. What coach isn't going to want to go to a big name school, from a big name conference, that pays big time money and plays in big bowls and has access to play in national championships?

If Ruff doesn't fail and exceeds what Skip took us to, then I will be okay with Riley. If we continue to flounder and embrace mediocrity then a change will have to be made and it will probably come at the cost Ruffin's position rather than Riley. All the Texas Tech coaches have been fired or have left from Ruff's staff. Ruff and Riley are the only one's left as far as I know. With their removal our defense has started to get better. Our special teams and running game has gotten much much better. I am one that sees a pattern in things. I hope things work out for Ruff, but I am still not sold on him. I am sold on some of the newer coaches that he hired like Rick Smith and Kirk Doll. When these guys came on you saw an immediate change on defense (Rick) and better running game, receiving game and special teams (Kirk).

"The BCS created a big money gap that we can't compete with."

There has always been a money gap between the top teams and everybody else. But over the last twenty years or so, that gap has been increasing exponentially. I'm afraid it's beyond fixing.

Riley seemed to be doing a pretty good job today. Perhaps we should be more concerned with holding on to Riley, rather than demoting or letting him go? He is a young guy that has a great future. How about we keep McNeill and Riley until Ruffin is ready to retire, then promote Riley to head coach.

This is the most consistent performance that I have seen under Ruff. We had the most balanced offensive attack that I have seen under Ruff. Lincoln Riley did a great job. My faith has been restored.

    Go Pirates!

I'm not sold on Lincoln Riley. I think he has problems adjusting to speedy aggressive defenses.

After this second straight week of inconsistent play and sloppy ball movement by the offense. I am beginning to think the same thing.

I thought the UNC game was a turning point. I guess I was wrong. He is still learning his job. The inconsistency of Ruff's teams are just killing me. One week they play with the heart of a champion and the next week they play like a team with a 2-10 record. I feel like I am starting to fall into apathy.

At least with Skip you knew that you were going to get consistency on defense and offense.

Everyone seems to forget that the Pirates are contending for the eastern division title. It is a very doable goal. Every team has its ups and downs during the season. Riley's offense is doing a heck of a job. Few teams are going to produce a lot of points on VT and while they were flat against Tulane they nearly pulled that one out. I think they are in good shape and the offense is one of the more potent in the country. Now if the receiver corps have recovered and the line, and QB stay healthy this could be one of the best seasons ever!

I just hope you can beat NC State. Everyone else has! The way they copied your logo was very rude!

What they did was a complete rip off and showed no originality on their behalf. They ripped off the Mississppi State "Our State" Slogan and LSU video on top off our mid-field logo. How can an AD in good conscience say that their mid-field logo was not a rip-off of our midfield logo? That completely blows my mind.

We better beat them, but one thing I do know is that emotion will be a plenty on both sides.

At this point anyone that doesn't have faith in coaches McNeil and Riley can't be happy with anyone short of Saben. They have proven themselves to be outstanding. And the DC (Smith) deserves a big hand as well. The turnaround has been amazing.
