Congrats to Ruff and the Pirates for being selected to play in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl !! I lived in the St. Pete -- Tampa area for 7 years. It's a great place to visit and a wonderful climate this time of year. It's only a 1 hour 20 minute flight or about a 10 hour drive from central NC. I don't know if there is a choice of tickets for the "ECU" side -- but I suggest trying to sit in the outfield side of the baseball stadium. Sitting behind the home plate side will put you much further away from the action.

I was originally excited about playing an AAC team as our opponent. I thought it would be of some intrigue to play a team of equal talent and conference recognition to ECU -- especially going into that conference next year. However, thanks to SMU not winning a final 6th game, the AAC could not fulfill all of their bowl affiliations. Not sure what that says about the AAC? But anyway, we have been reduced to now having to play a 6th place MAC team of the Ohio Bobcats. Great !!! I was happy we weren't earlier selected to play in New Orleans and be forced to compete against a Sun Belt team again. I thought THAT would have been a "no win" situation -- but this may even be worse. I am still really hoping for a win for the Pirates -- but was also hoping that if we happen to win, it would actually mean something as far as the level of competition or league recognition. We can still manage a 10 win season which is awesome no matter who you've beaten. I just wished we wouldn't have been put in a situation of being heavily favored and if we win -- no big deal, you're supposed to. But if we lose to an inferior league team like last year -- oh my !!

PS: I don't recommend for our single guys to visit the legendary Mons Venus in Tampa. They have changed the local laws and it's not quite the same since I lived there.

Has anyone who is planning on attending this bowl game looked at the seating diagram ?? It's being held in Tropicana Field indoor "baseball" stadium. It's the worst seating I have ever seen for a football game. The only decent seats that are close and adjacent to the field are in section 200 along the first base side. All other seats are either a mile away, weird angle or an end zone view. It appears the only good view of the game will be on TV. I hope the Pirate Nation will support this game. But, you won't be able to see the fans or stands from the TV coverage. At least it won't be as bad as being outdoors in Yankee stadium having to watch that bowl game.

By the way -- ECU is a 13 1/2 point favorite. Only the 7th game out of the 35 total bowl games to have a double digit point spread. ECU has been somewhat tricky when playing in a game they are heavily favored. Let's hope they start quickly and don't let off the gas peddle and let these guys hang around close until the end.

I wouldn't worry about what sort of recognition the Pirates will get for beating a MAC team as opposed to an AAC team. At the end of the day, all that folks will remember is 10-3, not which 10. By August, only Pirate fans will remember who they played.

I just read the 2013 Bowl Game rankings from ESPN -- ranking all 35 bowl games from best to worst. I assume it was based on somewhat the level of competition and how worthy of a game to watch. Here's how CUSA was ranked.

Liberty (Rice)#24 -- CUSA highest ranked bowl game.
    Armed Forces (Mid. Tenn.) #30
    Military (Marshall) #31
    New Orleans (Tulane) #32
Heart of Dallas (North Texas) #35 dead last

ECU' bowl game of Beef O'Brady came in at only #33. So, other than Liberty, ALL CUSA bowl games were ranked at the very bottom as the worst games to watch. Only the Potato Bowl was the only non-CUSA game included in the bottom five. I think this speaks volumes of the lack of football respect and recognition the "powers to be" have of CUSA. It also speaks to the lowest level of competition that CUSA has lined up to play in their affiliated bowls. It basically says that CUSA and its bowl opponents are a bunch of "no-names" and "nobodies". I am so glad that ECU is moving out of this embarrassing league and into the AAC. But what may be even more embarrassing for ECU is that we couldn't even play for, much less win the CUSA Championship our last year in this pitiful league.

I would have thought that Maryland and Marshall would be higher. I figured ours would be a lackluster bowl. Get ready there are about to be 39 bowls next year. The one good thing for us is that we don't have a minimum ticket allotment to sell for BOB.

All we need to do is win our game and get 10 wins. We will have better bowls in the American. Ruff did get some quality wins over two BCS teams and then a road win over MTSU. It was obvious that the coaching staff didn't have us ready for Marshall. It was also obvious that Marshall's coaching staff did not have them ready for their game against Rice. I think Ruff has us going in the right direction. My fear is this.... Ruff's teams are very unpredicatable. You never know what team is going to show up on any given day. With Skip Holtz, it was predicatable. You would get a solid, hard nosed, smash mouth football game. Heck, with Mike Leach at Texas Tech you always knew you were going to get a high powered offensive attack with little defense. Ruff needs to cut down on the inconsistency which to me is tied to preparation. He has done a better job this year, then in years past. The exception being ODU, MTSU, Tulane, Marshall and FIU in my opinion. Last year, we may have been 8-5, but we could have easily been 5-7 as they were very inconsistent with their play on both sides of the ball.

Get ready there are about to be 39 bowls next year.

That's one additional game for the playoffs, plus three new bowl sites. The AAC has tie-ins with all three - the Miami Beach Bowl, the Boca Raton Bowl and the Bahamas Bowl. The AAC will alternate with the latter two each year.

Those may be attractive sites from a vacation point of view, but the competition won't be any better. 39 bowls means 76 teams (two of the playoff teams will play twice). This year was the only one in memory in which that many teams were bowl eligible. There were only 72 in 2011 and 2012.

For 2014, the AAC's bowl lineup will be:
    BBVA Compass, Birmingham
    Beef O'Brady's, St Pete
    Armed Forces, Ft Worth
    Miami Beach, Miami
    Military Bowl, Annapolis, MD
    Bahamas, Bowl, Nassau

Solich is a great coach. That is what kept Ohio U in the game. Glad we got that bowl losing streak monkey off our back. We played amazing in the fourth quarter hold them to no points when they recovered the onside kick. the defense stepped up and the offense exploded. I am so very proud of our guys. It is rare to get a 10 win season. We Pirates need to enjoy this one.
