I agree with your comment about recruiting rankings. They don't really mean much unless you're a top level program and it usually means that they have signed more 5 & 4 star recruits. ECU's recruiting has always been 2nd level -- maybe a little better than it used to be. Beating in-state schools and getting some type of national recognition will somewhat increase that.

However, being that ECU's recruiting is pretty much the same as it always has been, it really comes down to what the coaching staff can do with it. How much of a better player can they create above their actual talent level. Steve Logan and his staff were the best at doing that. Skip Holtz and his staff could also get the maximum out of the same level of recruits ECU has always been able to get. Both staffs were able to rise above their talent level, compete AND win against schools of better records and supposedly better talent. That's really what good coaching and decision making ability is all about -- making the most and best of what you have to work with.

Unfortunately, I have not seen that with Ruff and his staff during his tenure. They have gotten better, but no where near they need to be. They have been only capable of winning the games they are expected to win. UNC this past year was the only game they have won in which they were not favored. They were not able to win CUSA games against teams of at least equal talent (like Marshall & UCF), much less against tough O/C teams. Ruff has created a wonderful "family atmosphere" in which any player would love to play in. But, I do have my doubts if Ruff and his staff are capable of taking the program to the next level of true success. I have seen no signs in the last 5 years that will happen. And we are really going to be tested next season in the new AAC. I will at least wait until then before my personal jury determines if Ruff can take ECU beyond mediocrity.

Honestly, the recruiting rankings mean diddly to me...unless you're Alabama, Texas, Florida, LSU, etc they don't determine your future success. The caliber of recruits that Ruffin has brought in and signed recently are on the same level as the AAC and in state schools. My point is that once the big boys like FSU and the major SEC schools get their fill, then everyone else is picking up the leftovers.

Keep in mind too that we stole away several recruits on signing day from the likes of VaTech and Minnesota.

I'm very optimistic for The Pirates, but it won't be a cake walk with UNC+at USC+ at VaTech on our non-conf. schedule....Ruffin and crew will need to take full advantage of the depleted AAC to make the season a success.

Next year, ECU will still start out with the burden of being in a conference that is clearly below the stature of the P5. But at least they will be in one of the two G5 conferences that are measurably ahead of the MAC, SunBelt and C-USA. Now the Pirates' challenge will be to get to the top of their conference. That starts with recruiting.

Now that signing day has passed, ECU did OK, but not great. Their 2014 class ranked #76 among FBS schools, putting them tied (with Houston) for 5th in the AAC behind USF (#39), Cincinnati (#58), Temple (#61) and UCF (#74). That's not too big a hill to climb, but it may take a few years, so fans need to be patient.

This is correct, Ken. The Sagarin poll is the truest form of any rankings or ratings. It takes into account not only the school's win-loss record, but maybe even more importantly, the strength of schedule and their opponent's win- loss record. In other words -- who did you beat.

Therefore, even winning 10 games like ECU did this year really doesn't mean much of anything if the wins are primarily against a bunch of losers. That's why I've been harping on ECU needs to now win the games that matter against teams of at least equal or better records, talent and "sports world" recognition. Until they are capable of that, (which they haven't been) they will not be able to take the program to a higher level. If ECU only continues to beat the teams they are supposed to -- they will be stuck in being considered a mediocre team and program. I'm just at least one ECU fans that hopes and wishes for better.

I totally disagree. The 32% Ken was speaking of was CUSA overall. That's mainly because CUSA was mostly pitiful and were playing O/C teams much better than they were. ECU normally schedules at least 3 out of 4 good teams for their O/C opponents. We just happened to catch UNC, NCSU and Va. Tech in somewhat down years this past season. Regardless, we still won 75% O/C (should have beat Va. Tech) and beating UNC and NCSU may have a positive impact on in-state recruiting. It shows possible recruits that ECU is moving in the right direction, while the other schools are struggling to improve. It's always tougher to recruit against BCS league teams, but if we can beat them, it shines a new light on ECU's program and possibilities.

And have you seen next year's O/C teams ?? Other than the "warm up" game against NC Central -- we again will be playing 3 "big league" teams of SC, UNC and Va. Tech. That's about as good we can do. However, in order to have a positive effect on the program and possible recruits, we will need to win those games or at least the majority. ECU has not proven to me over the past few years that they can be the "giant killers" as they once were. That means beating know programs that currently have a decent team that we are not suppose to win. I mean, we can't even beat a team of equal talent and league recognition as of late. Next year's new AAC schedule and our O/C opponents will be a true test to see if ECU is up to the challenge in proving they can have a respectable program.

I agree, especially when the 32% was UNC and NCSU. Beating those two gets us nothing. We need to play stronger teams outside our conference.

ECU is rated #56 in the final Sagarin Power Ratings. It is what it is. CUSA was clearly a weaker league this year, with the start of the exodus to the AAC. They won only 32% of their non-conference games against other FBS schools. That's not going to get you much love.

OK, I stand corrected !! Please disregard my previous rants about ECU not getting the respect they deserve. Obviously, winning 10 games (regardless of opponents), winning their Bowl Game by 17 (regardless of opponent) has gotten the attention of the "sports world". And thus, ECU has been mentioned in various season finale polls.

I will give a breakdown of these polls:

AP Poll -- ECU is in the bottom of the Honorable Mention. No Marshall, No Rice

Coaches Poll -- ECU is in top-end of bottom half of HM. Marshall is ahead of ECU in HM.

BCS -- ECU is rated at #52, ahead of all CUSA teams.

Harris Poll -- Rice is in HM. No ECU and NO Marshall

CBS Sports -- ECU is ranked #24 !!!! Up 13 spots from previously before Bowl Game. Marshall #33 and Rice #46.

Congratulations to Ruff, his staff and the players (especially the seniors) for producing a very successful season. I certainly hope they can carry over this success and momentum into next year in the AAC. I wonder if the above polls indicate that ECU will begin next season starting out at least in the Honorable Mention -- like we did this past year. Next year, the stakes will be much higher in the AAC. The highest ranked team from a non-BCS league will get auto-berth to the BCS playoffs. Go pirates !!
