I'm not sure if the job was offered to Hoke and / or Withers first or if it got that far. I have heard that Chezik and Hoke assistants were too expensive for the ECU budget so they may have been unable to agree. Montgomery may have cost less, leaving more on the table for assistants. If so that might have been the smart move in this case. If you have a strong staff, combined with an energetic young HC, good things can happen. If the name coach comes in but nothing for assistants it might be the very train wreck we were trying to avoid.

Shocked by this one. However, Duke has had a solid offense. I bet Compher figured Hoke would bolt to a better conference if he had a good first 2 years.

Doesn't matter now, looks like the Pirates are going the up and comer route this time. Scottie Montgomery OC at Duke appears to be the man. High risk but with it comes potentially high reward.

my point is Hoke hasn't won a championship either and his winning percentage is lower. If you're going to fire a man have somebody better to replace him not one with a worse record

Coach McNeill was unable to win a championship at ECU so I don't get your point. Even in a watered down CUSA in his 10 win season he didn't win the conference or even the division. When we moved to the AAC the level of competition increased significantly but we had possibly the most talented team in program history with Carden, Hardy etc, yet we blew several games, faded in the last half of the season as we did each year, and could only get 8 wins. In regards to money for assistants the problem was that Coach McNeill was loyal to a fault. He was unwilling to fire any assistants and they were unwilling to provide the $ if it wouldn't make changes. It is a tough business, but when you are making the type of money head football coaches make you have to meet expectations. The payout is for a little under 1 million, not over. Two years at $400k and what is left in this year. In the long run the change is what is best for the program.

I agree. The UCF game was the worst in history. I hope he does well at UVA. As a head coach he didn't seem to have the wisdom in the midst of the game I.e. strategy, countering teams, clock management, etc...

you make my point for me Hoke has never won a championship or even come close they fire Ruff because they wanted better but settle for someone whose record is not as good. While you re reading check out the article where Virginia just picked McNeil up and read the part about him not signing extension because was not given enough for his assistants. This after they say he was fired because of not making changes, wonder how he was to do that if they didn't want to cough up money. They will pay in the long run Ruff will get $400,000 for the next 3 years from what I hear

Finishing my thought: Hoke went downward in his last season at Michigan at 5-7 so there is a red flag, but it runs counter to everything else on his resume. There is no perfect candidate, ever. But a simplistic comparison of winning to losing seasons isn't a good measuring stick. I still prefer Withers though his resume isn't as extensive at Hokes. I like that he has recruited extensively in the region and has extensive local ties. Either will be a game time upgrade, though it will probably not be an upgrade for all things off the field. Coach McNeill was great at that, but you have to win football games you are suppose to win.

How closely have watched ECU football games over Coach McNeill's tenure? The mistakes were recurring with clock management, play calling and on field discipline and with an upgrade in conference we weren't keeping up. As great as coach was with off field discipline, recruiting and PR his shortcomings were such that we were trending downward with no sights (upgrading assistant coaches for instance) that anything was going to turn positive.

Hoke turned around floundering programs at Ball State and SDSU. His losing seasons were at the start of his tenure at each school, ie he trended upward. At Michigan he took over a program that was under 500 in two of the last three seasons under R. Rodriguez and won 11 games in his first year. From there he went down in the W-L records but had 8 and then 7 wins before going 5-7 when

From what I see he has 6 seasons with a winning record and 6 seasons with a losing record. Surely they don't think that is better than Ruff

The announcement is more likely Sunday evening or Monday. ECU Trustees have a special meeting at 5pm on Sunday to discuss "privileged personnel item." I would assume they will have to sign off on the deal before any announcement. The CSNbbs site is out of commission so I'm missing out on all the wild rumors.

Well Hoke lives in North Carolina so that might not mean anything. But it does sound like he and Withers are the ones that got through the second interview. It sounds like Beamer is out. Of course Chizik might still be in the running. Any of those three would work for me, but I'd like to see Withers get the job based on him not being a recycle coach, but a coach on the rise.

Heard that Brady Hoke came back to NC today after he had already interviewed. The word is that he will be announced as the head coach tomorrow.
