Why did Coach Ruffin get fired?

  • wkmeekins Nov 26, 2016

Bring back Ruffin he at least was competitive in the games he lost. Better yet fire the AD for causing this mess.

All of the hires look strong. The La Tech OC looks good. The only possible negative I've read is that he hasn't been doing that much of the play calling, Holtz took back those duties after the first year he was OC for him. But that could be more about Skip that anything he did. His QB coaching has been praised universally.

What do you think about him stealing our OC from Skip at La Tech?

  • lazydawg58 Dec 24, 2015

It appears he has been able to hire some quality assistants so far. I understand they offered a contract for OC to a guy from U of Arizona. If he comes on board that might be a home run.

That could be said about any coach that comes to ECU. The exceptions were Logan and Ruffin. The only way that Coach Mo may stay (if he does well) is if ECU is included in the last round of expansion that the Big 12 is going to conduct. If we move up to a P5 conference it will be easier to keep coaches.

He was definitely not the AD's Plan A when he fired Ruffin. They couldn't afford Plan A once UNC increased his salary. That being said, I think Scottie could be good for ECU, of course, he won't stick around once he has one or two good seasons.

Are they getting any money back from Ruff getting hired at UVA? I agree with your point about assistants. We do need to invest more money, makes me wonder if we have a financial shortfall in the Athletic department. I guess we better hope we get some up and comers.

I think the university is making a mistake in not increasing the money available for staff significantly. If they were going to pay a "big name" coach 2 million they should have committed to putting 500k more in the pot when they signed coach Mo for half that. 1.8 million just isn't enough. Many other programs in the AAC have about 2-2.5 million. Being better able to offer a competitive salary to a OC or DC or even a position coach would make a significant difference.

Let's see whom he brings on as his assistants. It could be very telling of the type of coach he is. I have confidence in him that he will be a good coach. He won me over at the press conference, but we need to see him in action.

I hope it works out. I'm not sure it was an upgrade from McNeil.

  • lazydawg58 Dec 13, 2015

Didn't hear his name much in the last few days. I guess the AD did a good job of keeping a secret until it was decided. Of course everything gets leaked on tweety before any official announcement. He is young with lots of energy but no head coaching experience. Hopefully Cutcleff has been preparing him for the opportunity. I thing he is a good recruiter, well at least he should know the state. This could be a great hire or it might not workout. I'm going to be positive. Go Pirates.
