Raleigh, N.C. — Of the 27 elite runners to gather in Raleigh for the Sir Walter Miler Friday night, eight were fast enough to meet the challenge, and two will compete later this month in the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
The standard is a 4-minute mile for men and a sub-4:30 mile for women. With a cheering crowd lining the track at Meredith College, three women and five men met the mark.
The fastest runner in each race was a University of Virginia grad. For the women, Stephanie Garcia crossed the finish line first. Robby Andrews led the men with a 3:57 finish.
Andrews and Garcia are off to Beijing for the world championships.
