Two-time U.S. Open champ Ernie Els played a full 18-hole practice round on Pinehurst No. 2 Sunday in preparation for the 2014 tournament.
The course, which has been restored to its original wire-grass, bunker filled version, left an impression with the former champ.
“It looks great. I really like the new look, or the old look, depending how you look at it,” Els said with a laugh. “I mean, I think what they’ve done, I never saw it in the ‘40s or ‘50s but I’m sure this is the way it used to be.”
Some of the bigger names that played in the St. Jude have not yet arrived at Pinehurst, Webb Simpson and Phil Mickleson, they’ll begin to have their practice rounds later in the week.
Play begins Thursday for the men and on June 19 for the women.
