Durham, N.C. — Duke men’s epee Dylan Nollner and women’s epee Isabella Barna both posted top-20 finishes at the US Fencing North American Cup on Saturday and Sunday, December 8-9, in Milwaukee, Wisc.
Barna, a freshman from Bend, Ore., took 17th place out of 113 entries in Division I women’s epee at the national event. Barna, who placed 27th at the World Cup in Slovakia in late November, got off to a dominant start by defeating all six opponents in her first-round pool. She extended her winning streak to eight bouts following a victory in round two and a first-round win in the repechage before falling to eventual third-place finisher Mason Speta, 10-9, in the round of 16.
Nollner, who turned in a third-place finish at the November NAC in Virginia Beach, Va., placed 20th out of 197 competitors in the Division I men’s epee field. The Ogden, Utah, native went 5-1 in the opening round and defeated both opponents in round two to advance to the repechage of 32. Nollner advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Alexander Tsinis, 15-12, who went on to place sixth.
The performances will boost the national standings of both Nollner and Barna, who entered the December NAC ranked in the top 20 in their respective divisions. Nollner, following his third-place showing at the Virginia Beach NAC, sat in 18th place before his finish on Saturday. Barna was ranked tied for fifth in the junior women’s epee division.
