Posted November 11, 2013
The Duke field hockey team received the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship and will serve as one of four regional host sites for the first and second rounds of action this weekend at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium, as announced Sunday, Nov. 10 on the NCAA.com.
The eighth-ranked Blue Devils (14-6) will face New Hampshire (15-6) in the first round Saturday, Nov. 16, with Virginia and Massachusetts also squaring off in first round action in Durham. The two winning teams will meet Sunday, Nov. 17 to determine the squad that advances to the national semifinals Friday, Nov. 22 at the L.R. Hill Complex in Norfolk, Va. The national championship match is slated for Sunday, Nov. 24.
"We're ecstatic that we're the fourth seed and that we're hosting," said head coach Pam Bustin. "This team has worked extremely hard this season to earn a place in the tournament. To be recognized and to earn a home seed is really exciting. It's a great tournament and the ACC is well-represented, so we're excited to be at home."
Duke and New Hampshire will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils lead the overall series between the two schools 3-1, winning the last matchup in 2009 by a score of 7-1.
The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 15-11 in NCAA Tournament action and have received bids to the postseason event 11 times in program history with four national semifinal appearances and three trips to the championship match (2003, 2004, 2005). Duke is also 8-3 all-time in first round contests. Under the direction of Bustin, the program is 1-1 in NCAA Tournament competition after reaching the quarterfinals in 2011.
