King Rice will continue his role as the head men's basketball coach at Monmouth University through the 2021-2022 season, the athletics department announced Friday. The former Tar Heel point guard, who played under Dean Smith from 1987-1991, agreed to the five-year contract after first starting at Monmouth in November 2014.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to lead the Monmouth program for five more years," Rice said in the official release of the news. "When I got here I knew I was so fortunate and so blessed to be the coach here and after six years, to re-sign for five more means a lot to me and my family. I just feel very fortunate that I get to represent Dr. McNeil and Monmouth University."
Rice was named to MAAC Coach of the Year two years in a row with a 55-15 record across those seasons, becoming just the second coach in the history of the conference to earn the title in consecutive seasons. The Hawks made the postseason in both 2016 and 2017, hosting NIT games in back-to-back years.
This five-year extension is Rice's third contract with Monmouth.
