Former UNC player cited for drugs at Williams-owned home

— Former University of North Carolina basketball player Will Graves was cited last Friday and charged with marijuana possession at a house owned by Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams.

Records show that Graves was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession at 1016 Pinehurst Drive in Chapel Hill, which is a home owned by Williams, according to property tax records. Graves was found to be in possession of 4.4 grams of marijuana, three full blunts, two “burnt marijuana blunts,” eight marijuana seeds and a grinder, police said.

A meter reader with the utility company called police after assessing the house that was thought to be vacant but suspected somebody was living at the residence.

A UNC spokesperson confirmed that Graves was renting the home from Williams while he was working as a part-time video coordinator for the basketball program and attending UNC-CH to finish his degree. The spokesperson added that “various people have rented the house.”

Graves, 24, was a member of the UNC team until his dismissal in Oct. 2010 for failing to comply with team rules as a senior.

“We were thrilled to have Will come back to work towards his degree, but we are certainly disappointed with this situation,” said Williams in a statement.

Graves also released a statement on Friday, saying he was sorry to Williams, his family and UNC for the negative attention he brought on them.

"I can only blame myself for my own stupid actions. Coach Williams has stood up for me on numerous occasions and it causes me great turmoil to let him down in this way," Graves said. "He gave me an opportunity to finish my degree this semester, and I have successfully achieved that goal, which was a lifelong dream for my family and me."

"Unfortunately, I have no urge to celebrate that accomplishment because of the situation I brought upon myself," Graves added. "I understand my actions were wrong and I take full and complete responsibility for them."

Graves is due in court Feb. 3.

How much money is Williams making that he can afford to rent out a 1/2 million dollar house? What the heck is he actually living in?? No wonder tuition is so high..........................Just wondering

Totally agree. Roy gave Will several chances before he was kicked off the team permanently. The fact that he's stood by him and Will repays that with this action shows him for the ungrateful, irresponsible young man that he is. His apologies are getting tired and old. To do anything to in anyway further hurt the program or Roy is unforgiveable. If Roy is guilty of anything, it is standing by his players and trying to help them. Will should no longer be associated with UNC in anyway.

It's sad when some folks let their love for one school, or hate for another, cause them to lose all ability to think reasonably.

broken window on a supposedly vacant house...in that neighborhood I would have reported it also.

  • tanntamount Dec 15, 2013

Did the meter reader assess the residence by going inside the house, find the marijuana, and contacted the police? Just curious ......

Well, well, well Roy. Why is THIS no surprise? <SMH>

Actually... there has been research conducted on how marijuana impacts driving ability. Marijuana's effect is, in general, a bit less than alcohol and its effect is primarily to lessen the ability to maintain lateral position on the road (side to side) and the magnitude of the effect is related to the THC dose in the marijuana... which may vary and the consumer most often has no idea of what that is. All in all... I don't want you driving on the same road I'm driving on if you have consumed alcohol, marijuana, or even a high dose of many cold medications. Impairment of driving ability is IMPAIRMENT - no matter what substance or drug causes the impairment. Far too few people realize that. The last thing I want is to add an additional group of impaired drivers on the road with me or my family and friends - the marijuana users - to those already driving impaired by alcohol! Read the research - marijuana is not as "innocent" and innocuous as some lead you to believe. It is NOT "risk free"!
