Francella leads group with local ties at U.S. Women's Open

There are ten golfers competing in this year’s U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club with ties to the Triangle area, and all of them are looking up at Meaghan Francella on the scoreboard. 

Francella, a graduate from North Carolina, is at +3 after two rounds following a one-over-par 72 Friday, seven shots off the lead currently held by Cristie Kerr.

Meanwhile, Katherine Perry, a 17 year-old rising senior from Athens Drive High School, finished her first U.S. Open at +20.

Perry, who won’t make the cut to play the weekend, did make par on four of her last five holes to end the tournament on a high note.

Though the current Jaguar won’t be teeing it up on Saturday and Sunday, a number of other players with connections to the Triangle will.

Along with Francella, former Duke players Anna Grzebien, Mina Harigae, and Brittany Lang appear on their way to a made cut.

Grzebien is in the clubhouse at +8, one shot better than the projected cut line, while Lang has finished her second round one shot better.

Harigae, who ended +1 on the day, sits comfortably at seven over par.

Two players linked to our area that are hoping to be around for the final two rounds are former Duke athletes Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee, both of whom finished at +9 after 36 holes – right on a cut line that has hovered between +8 and +9 throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Lindy Duncan, who will start her Duke career in a few weeks, finished at +12 for her two rounds, while former Blue Devil Rebecca Kim finished her Open at +31.

Briana Vega, an N.C. State grad, shot a 160 for a two-day total of +18.
