Muller: Canes not becoming a defensive team

Posted November 6, 2013

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller wants to clear the air about the perception that his team is becoming a defensive team. Speaking after practice Wednesday, he said that is simply not the case.

"We're not, I have to get that clear," Muller said. "What we are doing is playing better in our zone. And we are working on it since day one - playing well without the puck, that should never hinder or affect your offense. So I think I have to clear that part of it because offensively, our scoring chances are there as much as they were last year when we were capitalizing."

Muller said that the only difference from last year's team and this is that they are not capitalizing on as many opportunities in the offensive zone.

"We have the same shots as last year, the same chances, now we just have to finish on them," Muller said. "Our forecheck is the same, our neutral zone attack is the same, our system is the same, we just fine tuned our defensive zone coverage and worked on that part of it."

Nathan Gerbe never doubted he'd be a hockey player

His family hockey history includes days off school skating on the backyard pond in Michigan, he told Mike Maniscalco in a Canes Corner visit Nov. 4, 2013.

Malhotra comes up big in Overtime

Manny Malhotra oined Adam and Joe to discuss his game-winning goal versus Philadelphia, which ended the Hurricanes five game losing streak. Malhotra felt nervous energy coming from the crowd. He said with Philly scoring late in the 3rd, the Canes could have lost faith, but stuck with it, and gutted out the win.

Injury Front

On the injury front, Jeff Skinner sought a second opinion on his upper body injury in New York Tuesday. No results were available from that checkup.

Cam Ward might be ahead of schedule and did off-ice workouts while Anton Khudobin had a light skate Wednesday.

Tim Gleason skated, but his status hasn't changed. Kevin Westgarth also skated separate from practice. Gleason and Westgarth are both day to day.

Alexander Semin did not participate in practice Wednesday, but it was simply a maintenance day.

Coming up

Carolina hosts the New York Islanders Thursday night, the second meeting of Metro division opponents. Carolina won 4-3 on Long Island on Oct. 19. The four goals is a season high total.

Who on earth says we are becoming a defensive team? Did I miss something? I haven't seen defense on this team in nearly three years. I guess the only reason people are saying that is because the offense packed up and left town. Though that part is true, it does not qualify us as a defensive team. You actually have to play defense to be a defensive team.
