Gilford of St. Aug scores 3 TDs in loss to Fayetteville State

— Quarterback A.J. Gilford (R-Fr./Savannah, Ga.) of Saint Augustine’s University rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another score in a 43-19 CIAA football loss to Fayetteville State University at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium on Saturday, October 26, 2013.

Gilford scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter. He connected with Herman Reaves (R-Jr./Miami, Fla.) on an 18-yard touchdown pass and scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Gilford completed 23-of-42 pass attempts for 178 yards off the bench. He threw one interception. Gilford also led the Falcons in rushing with 46 yards.

Brian Richards (R-Sr./Waldorf, Md.), the Falcons’ career receptions leader, caught seven passes for 62 yards. Jermaine Jones (R-Sr./Wilmington, N.C.) added five receptions for 34 yards.

Linebacker Chaz Robinson (Sr./Hampton, Va.) finished with a game-high 10 tackles including a game-high three tackles for loss. The St. Aug career tackles leader, Robinson needs 23 tackles in the final two games to break the school single-season record.

Linebacker Elijah Evans (R-Soph./College Park, Ga.) added eight tackles and linebacker Carlton Butts (Jr./Thomasville, Ga.) had one sack and one interception which led to Gilford’s 11-yard touchdown run.

The Falcons came alive in the second half, but were undone by seven total turnovers including five in the first half. The Broncos scored 27 points off the Falcons’ turnovers.

The Falcons fumbled the opening kickoff, but the defense held firm and forced the Broncos to turn the ball over on downs.

The Falcons (3-5 overall, 2-3 CIAA Southern Division) gained possession but threw an interception on the first play of their opening drive. It led to a Broncos’ touchdown for a 7-0 lead. The Broncos intercepted a pass for a 31-yard touchdown return on the Falcons’ second possession to stretch the score to 14-0. FSU capitalized on two St. Aug fumbles in the second quarter which helped the Broncos take a 33-0 lead into halftime.

Gilford’s first rushing score and Michael Lima’s (R-Jr./Miami, Fla.) extra point put the Falcons on the scoreboard after the Broncos opened the second half with a field goal. FSU added a passing touchdown in the third quarter for a 43-7 lead, but the Falcons outscored the Broncos 12-0 in the fourth quarter on Gilford’s scoring pass to Reaves and his second rushing touchdown.

Derek Bryant completed 15-of-45 pass attempts for 234 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for the Broncos (5-3 overall, 4-1 CIAA Southern Division). Andre Montgomery rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown and Tavon Gatlin had four receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Dwayne Lorrick caught four passes for 53 yards and one touchdown for the Broncos. The trio of Joseph McLean, Courtney Tate and Simeon Marshall each had six tackles.

The Falcons host Johnson C. Smith University in the season’s final home game at John H. Baker Stadium on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Game time is 1:30 p.m. The contest will be played on Senior Day.
