NOTES:A stellar field is on hand this week for the second installment of the
World Golf Championships events, the Cadillac Championship. The top 53 players in the world are competing for the $1.53 million first prize. The purse increased $250,000 from last year to $9 million.

World No. 1 and defending champion Tiger Woods withdrew last week from the Honda Classic during the final round due to a back injury. Woods' status for this week will not be known until Thursday. He has not had a good start to 2014, finishing tied for 80th, tied for 41st and withdrawing in only three events.

Woods won this title for the seventh time last year. Only Sam Snead and Woods have won more times at a single event. Snead won in Greensboro, North Carolina eight times, while Woods has won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational eight times.

This event features players in the top 50 from the Official World Golf Rankings, any remaining top-30 players from the 2013 FedExCup Points List, any remaining top-20 players from the 2013 European Tour Race to Dubai, and any remaining top-two players from the 2012 Australasian Tour Order of Merit, Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, Asian Tour Order of Merit and Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit not already in the field. This event also features the top-10 players on the current PGA Tour FedExCup Points List and European Tour Race to Dubai.

This is the eighth straight year that the event will be held at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral. In 2006, the tournament was held at The Grove in Hertfordshire, England. The event was held at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco in 2005. The Jack Nicklaus-designed Mount Juliet Estate in Ireland hosted two times (2002, 2004). The first two years of the tournament were held in Spain at Valderrama, while the 2003 event was staged at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Woodstock, Georgia. The 2001 tournament was to be played at storied Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, but was canceled due to the tragedies of 9/11.

The TPC Blue Monster at Doral, which has played host to PGA Tour tournaments since 1962, became part of the TPC Network in November 2009. The course's 18th hole is traditionally one of the most difficult finishing holes in golf.

Cadillac became the new title sponsor in 2011. The tournament was previously known as the American Express Championship and CA Championship. The Doral tournament transitioned into a World Golf Championships event for 2007.

The four-day, 72-hole event features no cut with a field of 69. Last year, 65 players competed in the tournament. The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, the first in the series, was held at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Arizona. Jason Day captured that title, defeating Victor Dubuisson in the championship match. The third World Golf Championships event of 2013, the WGC- Bridgestone Invitational, will be held July 31st to August 3rd at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, where Woods won in 2013.

Last year, Woods held at least a share of the lead after every round in winning this tournament for the seventh time. Woods finished at 19-under-par 269. That was his 17th win in a World Golf Championship event, and the fourth PGA Tour event he has won at least seven times. Woods needed just 100 putts over the 72 holes. That is the fewest he's had in his career in a four-round event.

In 2012, Justin Rose came from behind on a wild Sunday at Doral to win. He posted rounds of 69-64-69-70 to finish at 16-under 272. That was good for a 1- shot victory over third-round leader Bubba Watson, who made things interesting on the famed 18th in the final round. After Rose bogeyed the 18th in the group ahead to sign for a 1-shot lead, Watson drove into the right rough. He pulled off an amazing approach by a tree that stopped nine feet from the hole. Watson needed to hole the putt to force a playoff and had to endure a long wait as Keegan Bradley butchered the 18th. Watson's putt never touched the hole and Rose earned his fourth PGA Tour title, and fifth on the European Tour.

Phil Mickelson overcame dehydration and exhaustion in the final round in 2009 to earn his first World Golf Championships title. Mickelson edged out his fellow overnight co-leader Nick Watney thanks to a 3-under 69. It was enough for Mickelson to get the victory at 19-under 269 and defeat Watney by a single stroke. The win was well-earned by Mickelson, who was treated with IVs in a medical facility Saturday night. Mickelson held at least a share of the lead after every round. He carded rounds of 65-66-69-69. Mickelson matched the best putting performance of his career with 99 putts over four rounds. He also had 99 putts at the 1998 MCI Classic in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

In 2006, Woods cruised to an 8-stroke win. Woods opened with a course-record 63 at The Grove in England and finished with rounds of 64-67-67 to win in wire-to-wire fashion. He set a new tournament record of 261, breaking his own mark of 263 set in 2002. He also established new 36-hole and 54-hole records, once again breaking his own marks from 2002. Woods has captured 18 World Golf Championship events and his total earnings for these tournaments are over $25 million.

The PGA Tour remains in Florida next week, moving to the west coast of the state for the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor. Kevin Streelman captured that title last year. The European Tour travels to Morocco for the Trophee Hassan II, where Marcel Siem won the 2013 event.
