NOTES:The PGA Tour and European Tour travel to Asia this week for the
World Golf Championships - HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China. Many of the best players in the world are on hand this week, with 40 of the top 50 in the world rankings in the field. The purse increased $1.5 million from last year to $8.5 million, with the winner receiving $1.4 million.

British Open champion Phil Mickelson is the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 3 in the world. He is joined by FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson (4), U.S. Open champion Justin Rose (5), former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy (6), Brandt Snedeker (9) and PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner (10).

This is the ninth staging of this tournament, but fifth as part of the PGA Tour. It is also the fifth year that the event is part of the World Golf Championships. The other WGC events are the Match Play Championship, Cadillac Championship and Bridgestone Invitational.

Sheshan International Golf Club is hosting the tournament for the eighth time in nine years. The only time it was not held at Sheshan International was in 2012, when it was played at Mission Hills Golf Club.

Last year, Ian Poulter closed with two weekend rounds of 65 and that helped him come from behind and win by two strokes over four players. Poulter, who won his second WGC title, finished at 21-under-par 267. He also won the 2010 WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship. Poulter's total of 267 bested the previous record of 268, which David Howell set in 2005 and Martin Kaymer matched in 2011.

In 2011, Kaymer birdied nine of his final 12 holes in the final round to rally and win. Kaymer fired a 9-under 63 at Sheshan International Golf Club to match the course record. His 5-shot comeback on the final day was the largest- ever in a WGC tournament.

Francesco Molinari opened with a 65 in 2010 and led wire-to-wire, holding off Lee Westwood by one shot to win. Molinari finished at 19-under-par 269 to capture his first World Golf Championships title and second victory on the European Tour. Molinari was the first player to win this tournament in wire- to-wire fashion.

In 2009, Mickelson fired four rounds in the 60s to hold off Ernie Els and win. Mickelson, who also won this title in 2007, completed the event at 17-under- par 271. It was Mickelson's second WGC victory of 2009, as he also captured the Cadillac Championship.

Mickelson did something he hadn't done in 14 years back in 2007: he won on foreign soil. It was Mickelson's first victory outside of the United States since he won the 1993 Perrier Open, a European Challenge Tour event.

David Howell shot four rounds in the 60s in 2005, closing with a 4-under 68 in the final round to cruise to a 3-stroke win over Tiger Woods at the inaugural tournament. Howell finished the event at 20-under-par 268.

Woods has dominated the World Golf Championships. In 42 career starts he has 18 wins and 34 top-10 finishes. In all, Woods has earned $25,628,889 in his 42 WGC appearances.

The PGA Tour heads to Georgia next week for the McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, where Tommy Gainey will defend his title. The European Tour travels to Turkey next week for the inaugural Turkish Airlines Open.
