Scott beats Dufner in Colonial playoff

Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Scott birdied the third playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Jason Dufner and win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Dufner closed with a 4-under 66 to get in at 9-under-par 271. Two groups later, Scott also shot 66 to join Dufner at minus-9.

No one in the final five groups at Colonial Country Club could match their total, so Dufner and Scott headed back to the 18th tee for the playoff.

Scott found the green with his approach, then Dufner knocked his second just inside Scott's ball. Both players 2-putted for par, and headed to the 17th.

From the fairway, Scott dropped his approach right over the flag and it stopped 14 feet away. Dufner stuffed his second within four feet. Scott drained his birdie effort, and Dufner matched that birdie, and they headed back to the 18th.

"It's tough to beat him. He's a great player. I thought maybe I could sneak one in there on 17, but he topped me," Dufner said.

For the third straight playoff hole, both men found the fairway off the tee. Dufner hit a poor second shot to about 35 feet. Scott stuck his within seven feet.

After Dufner's birdie try rolled by the hole, Scott drained his birdie chance for the win.

"This is a really special week for me. It was no matter what happened here, but to find my way back into this tournament around this golf course, it's an honor," Scott said. "There was some ups and downs, for sure on the course, but it was great."

Scott entered the week as the No. 1 player in the world. He joined David Duval and Vijay Singh as the only three players to win the week after they ascended to the top spot in the world rankings.

Nicholas Thompson (66) and Freddie Jacobson (67) shared third at minus-8.

Third-round leader David Toms closed with an even-par 70, and he dropped into a tie for fifth at 7-under-par 273. He was joined there by John Senden (68), Ryan Palmer (67), Brendon Todd (68) and David Lingmerth (66).

Third-round leader Chad Campbell was done in by three double-bogeys, which dropped him well out of contention. He closed with a 4-over 74 and fell into a tie for 30th at 3-under-par 277.

Campbell was one of at least six different players that had at least a piece of the lead during the final round.

Dufner started with birdies on the first and sixth. Back-to-back birdies at nine and 10 moved him into the lead at minus-9.

The reigning PGA Champion faltered to a bogey on the par-5 11th and dropped into a share of the lead with Campbell and Lingmerth. Dufner posted six straight pars before draining a 25-footer for birdie on the 18th.

That moved Dufner back to minus-9.

Two groups later, Scott joined him there. The Australian birdied the first and second. He traded a bogey for a birdie from the third. Scott rolled in a 6- foot birdie try on No. 6.

Scott made a mess of the ninth. He 3-putted en route to a double-bogey, which dropped him to minus-6. The 2013 Masters winner bounced back with birdies on 11 and 12.

The Australian ran home a 39-foot birdie effort on the par-4 14th to grab the lead at minus-9. Scott ended there with four pars in a row, and that allowed Dufner to join him there and force the playoff.

NOTES: Scott earned $1.152 million for the win ... With this victory, Scott completed the Texas slam as he also has won the Texas Open, the Houston Open and the Byron Nelson Championship ... Dufner fell to 1-3 in playoffs on the PGA Tour ... The tour heads to Ohio next week for the Memorial Tournament, where Matt Kuchar won by two strokes last year.
