NOTES:One of the finest fields of the season will be on hand this week for
the 39th staging of the Memorial Tournament, hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Eight of the top 11 players in the world are competing, including world No. 1 Adam Scott.

Scott won his first tournament as the new No. 1 player in the world last week at Colonial to increase his lead in the world rankings. He joined David Duval and Vijay Singh as the only players to win the week after they became the top player in the world.

Muirfield Village, designed by Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead, is ranked 14th by Golf Digest in America's 100 greatest courses. Muirhead passed away in 2002 at the age of 79. Muirhead also designed the Dinah Shore Course at Mission Hills where the Kraft Nabisco Championship on the LPGA Tour is played.

Each year the Memorial Tournament is dedicated to a person, living or deceased, who has played the game with conspicuous honor. The 2014 honoree is Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, who collected 72 LPGA Tour victories, including 10 major championships. She also was the first female golfer to break 60 in an official tournament.

Last year, Matt Kuchar carded a 4-under 68 in the final round and rolled to a 2-stroke victory over Kevin Chappell. Ahead by two entering the final round, Kuchar never relented the advantage, pushing his lead to four shots on the back nine before sinking a 21-foot birdie putt on the last to finish at 12- under-par 276.

Kuchar, currently ranked fourth in the world, has finished in the top 10 in his last five appearances here (T-10 in 2008, T-5 in 2009, T-8 in 2010, T-2 in 2011 and a win in 2013.

Tiger Woods birdied three of the final four holes, including a memorable chip shot at the 16th hole, and earned a 2-shot win over Andres Romero and Rory Sabbatini in 2012. Sitting at 7-under at the 16th hole and trailing Sabbatini by a stroke, Woods lined up a 50-foot downhill chip shot from 15 feet off the green. He bounced the ball off a ridge at the edge of the green, and the ball rolled toward the cup, falling in just before it lost momentum. It prompted Woods to unleash a tremendous fist pump, and he was left alone in the lead when Sabbatini bogeyed the same hole. He called it one of the hardest shots he has ever pulled off. Woods shot a final-round 67 and earned his 73rd career PGA Tour victory, which tied him with the tournament host Nicklaus for second all-time behind Sam Snead (82). Woods has since won six more times and now sits only three wins shy of Snead's remarkable total.

In 2011, Steve Stricker fired four rounds in the 60s to beat fellow Americans Brandt Jobe and Kuchar by one stroke. Stricker finished at 16-under-par 272. Prior to 2011, Stricker had played this tournament 11 times and had never posted a top-10 finish, which was the most starts without a top-10 for Stricker at any PGA Tour event. Stricker was the first player to post four rounds in the 60s since Bart Bryant did it en route to a victory in 2005.

Justin Rose finally captured his first PGA Tour win at this event in 2010. The Englishman closed with a flawless 6-under 66 in the final round to overcome a 4-shot deficit and beat Rickie Fowler by three. Rose finished with an 18-under 270, the lowest score posted in eight years. It was his first win in 162 starts on the PGA Tour. Rose became the seventh non-American champion in the history of this event, joining Korean K.J. Choi, Swede Carl Pettersson, South African Ernie Els, Fijian Vijay Singh, and Australians David Graham and Greg Norman.

In 2009, Woods birdied the final two holes to win this event for the fourth time. Woods closed with a 7-under 65, which was the low round of the final day. Woods' final-round 65 tied the lowest final round by a winner in tournament history. Choi (2007) and Jim Furyk (2002) also fired 65s in the final round when they won.

Kenny Perry erased a 3-shot deficit in the final round of 2008 to rally and win the title for the third time in his career. Perry closed with a 3- under 69 to collect a 2-shot win over Mathew Goggin, Jerry Kelly, Rose and Mike Weir. He finished at 8-under-par 280, the highest winning score since Hale Irwin won in 1985 with 281. Perry also won this tournament in 1991 and 2003 and joined Woods as the only players to win Nicklaus' tournament at least three times.

Perry's win in 2008 marked the sixth time that a player won this event in his 40s and the second time that Perry accomplished it. The others are Nicklaus (1984), Norman (1995), Tom Watson (1996), Perry (2003) and Bart Bryant (2005). Perry became the oldest winner in tournament history at 47 years, nine months and 22 days old.

In 2007, Choi converted a 5-foot par save at the 72nd hole to ward off Ryan Moore and win the title. Choi fired a final-round, 7-under 65 to finish at 17- under-par 271. Choi's 5-stroke comeback tied David Edwards and Furyk for the biggest final-round comeback in tournament history. Edwards rallied from a 5- shot deficit on the final day for victory in 1992 and Furyk turned the trick in 2002.

Els joined Tom Watson and Nicklaus as the only players to have won the British Open at Muirfield in Scotland and this event at Muirfield Village in Ohio in 2004.

There have been only four playoffs, the last coming in 1992 when Edwards defeated Rick Fehr on the second extra hole. There have been 21 tournaments played since the last extra session, the longest active playoff drought on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour moves to Memphis, Tennessee, next week for the FedEx St. Jude Classic, the final tune-up for the U.S. Open, as Harris English defends his title.
