NOTES:The PGA Tour travels north of the border this week for the 105th
edition of the Canadian Open at Royal Montreal Golf Club. The Canadian charge will be led by Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, Mike Weir, Stephen Ames and Adam Hadwin. Weir finished second at this event in 2004 and tied for fifth in 2008. Ames tied for eighth in 2009 and seventh in 2005. Hadwin finished tied for fourth in 2011. The purse increased $100,000 from last year to $5.7 million, with the winner receiving $1,026,000.

World No. 7 Matt Kuchar headlines the field. Kuchar won the RBC Heritage in April and is currently sixth on the PGA Tour money list. Also in the field is 2-time champion Jim Furyk, who is ranked 10th in the world. Furyk finished fourth last week at the British Open following a final-round 65. He is still looking for his first win since 2010. Furyk finished second at the Wells Fargo Championship and The Players Championship in May.

This tournament is the third oldest national championship in the world behind the British Open and U.S. Open. It has been held at 38 different courses across Canada. This is the first time it will be staged at Royal Montreal Golf Club since Scott Verplank won in 2001.

Last year, Brandt Snedeker jumped in front with a third-round 63 and went onto win by three strokes over Jason Bohn, Dustin Johnson, Kuchar and William McGirt. Snedeker finished at 16-under-par 272. The win was his sixth on the PGA Tour.

Four straight birdies early in the final round vaulted Scott Piercy into the lead in 2012. From there, he hung on to win for the second time on the PGA Tour. Piercy carded rounds of 62-67-67-67 to finish at 17-under-par 263, His total of 263 matched tournament's scoring record, first set by Johnny Palmer in 1952.

In 2009, Nathan Green parred the second hole of a sudden-death playoff and captured his first PGA Tour title when Retief Goosen sent his approach shot over the green and made bogey.

Chez Reavie fired rounds of 65-64-68-70 in 2008 to win by three strokes over Billy Mayfair. Reavie finished the event at 17-under-par 267 for his first PGA Tour title. Reavie held at least a share of the lead following every round. Reavie won in his first start at this event, becoming the first player to accomplish that feat since Jerry Pate in 1976.

Jim Furyk fired a final-round 64 in 2007, which included a hole-in-one, to defeat Vijay Singh by one stroke. Furyk finished at 16-under-par 268 at Angus Glen Golf Club. Furyk, who also won in 2006, became the first player to win two straight Canadian Opens since Jim Ferrier in 1950-51. Sam Snead (1940-41), Leo Diegel (1924-25, 1928-29) and J. Douglas Edgar (1919-20) also accomplished the feat.

In 2005, Mark Calcavecchia stormed out of the gate with rounds of 65-67 and held on to win despite finishing with two consecutive rounds over par (72-71). Calcavecchia finished the tournament at 5-under-par 275, which was the highest winning score on the PGA Tour in 2005 other than the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. The win was Calcavecchia's first on the PGA Tour since the 2001 Phoenix Open and ended a 4-year drought. Calcavecchia made only one birdie in his final 36 holes, becoming the first winner on the PGA Tour to have only one birdie in his final 36 holes since Curtis Strange at the 1989 U.S. Open. Calcavecchia became the oldest winner of this event at 45 years old, replacing Bob Tway, who was 44 when he won in 2003.

Singh defeated the Canadian Weir in 2004 on the third playoff hole. Weir was looking to become the first Canadian winner of this event since Pat Fletcher in 1954.

In 2000, Tiger Woods captured the rare Triple Crown. In doing so, Woods joined Lee Trevino as the only players to win the Canadian Open, U.S. Open and British Open in the same year. Trevino accomplished the Triple Crown Trophy performance in 1971. Only five players have captured the Canadian, U.S. and British Opens in their careers; Tommy Armour, Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer, Trevino and Woods.

Back in 1919, Edgar won this event by 16 shots, establishing a PGA Tour record for largest margin of victory; a margin equaled twice, but never broken. Joe Kirkwood, Sr. won the Corpus Christi Open in 1924 and Bobby Locke won the Chicago National Championship in 1948 by 16 strokes.

There have been 20 playoffs in the tournament's 104-year history. Eighteen players have posted multiple victories. Leo Diegel has four titles, while Tommy Armour, Snead and Trevino have each won three. Nicklaus, who won 73 times on the PGA Tour, never won this event, but finished second seven times. In fact, Nicklaus posted 19 top-25 finishes and placed in the top five 12 times. When John Oke captured the inaugural event back in 1904, his first- place check was $60.

The PGA Tour moves to Akron, Ohio, next week for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, where Tiger Woods will defend his title. The rest of the PGA Tour will be in Nevada for the Barracuda Championship, where Gary Woodland won last year.
