Walker rallies to win the Sony Open

Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Walker birdied four of the last six holes on Sunday as he came from behind to win the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Walker fired a bogey-free, 7-under 63 to finish at 17-under-par 263. This was his second victory on the PGA Tour. The first came last fall at the Frys.com Open, the first event of the new 2013-14 wrap-around season.

"I stayed patient. I was making a bunch of bogeys this week, but didn't make any today. The par save at 14 was key," Walker said in television interview. "I was able to remain calm all week. It's much easier to say than to do, but I learned a lot from my win at the Frys."

Chris Kirk, the third-round leader, birdied three of the last four holes to post a 4-under 66. He ended alone in second place at minus-16. Jerry Kelly, the 2002 champion, carded a 65 to grab third at 15-under-par 265.

Harris English posted a 3-under 67 on Sunday. He took fourth at minus-14, while Marc Leishman (65) grabbed fifth at 13-under 267.

Brian Stuard (67) was sixth at minus-12 and Jeff Overton (68) ended in seventh at minus-11.

World No. 2 Adam Scott (66), Matt Kuchar (66) and last week's winner Zach Johnson (69) were among 12 players that shared eighth place at 10-under 270.

Walker, who played in the penultimate threesome off the first tee, birdied the second to move within one of the lead at minus-11. He remained there as he ran off six straight pars from the third.

The 44-year-old 2-putted for birdie on the ninth and followed with a 19-foot birdie effort on No. 10 to grab a share of the lead at minus-13.

English and Kelly moved ahead of Walker, but Walker responded with a 4-foot birdie putt at 13. After a clutch 12-foot par saving putt on the 14th, Walker caught fire.

Walker poured in a 14-footer to join English at 15-under. Walker made it two in a row as his 7-foot birdie chance at 16 found the bottom of the cup. He wasn't done.

At the par-3 17th, Walker dropped his tee shot just inside six feet from the hole and he ran that putt in for a third consecutive birdie and a 2-shot lead. He scrambled to a par at the par-5 closing hole, then had to wait to see what would happen.

As Walker signed autographs, Kirk ran his eagle chip past the cup to give Walker his second win in four months.

"I made some birdies on the back, hit some really good shots, and made a really good par save and then hit some really good iron shots in," Walker stated. "I made some good putts, and making those three birdies in a row was big."

Kirk fell out of the lead as he played the first eight holes in 1-over par with a bogey on the fourth and seven pars. He started to fight back with consecutive birdies at nine and 10.

After four pars in a row from the 11th, Kirk birdied 15 and 17 to get within two. Needing an eagle at the last, Kirk's second from the right rough stopped nine yards short of the green.

Kirk ran his eagle chip eight feet by the hole. He converted that birdie try to grab second.

"I didn't look at the leaderboard until 17. I was just trying to play as well as I could," Kirk admitted. "I just couldn't buy a putt until the very end there."

NOTES: Walker, who earned $1.008 million, went 187 tour starts without a victory, but now has two in six starts ... The tour heads to California next week for the Humana Challenge, where Brian Gay is expected to defend his title.
