Funk, Goydos share lead in Hawaii

Oahu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred Funk fired a 10-under 62 in the second round Saturday and he soared into a share of the lead at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

Funk was joined at 15-under-par 129 by Paul Goydos, who posted a 9-under 63 in round two. Their total of 129 set a new tournament record. Bill Glasson set the old mark of 131 in 2012.

Corey Pavin's 11-under 61 was the low round of the day on Saturday at Kapolei Golf Course. Pavin, who was a playoff loser at this event last year, moved into a share of third. Vijay Singh carded a 7-under 65 to meet Pavin at minus-13.

Tom Pernice, Jr. scorched the course for a record 60 in the opening round, but managed just an even-par 72 in round two. He fell into a tie for fifth.

Mark Calcavecchia (65), Doug Garwood (63), Jim Carter (66) and Michael Allen (68) stand alongside Pernice at 12-under 132.

Rocco Mediate (65) headlines a group of five players that are one shot back at minus-11.

Funk opened with three pars in a row and followed with four consecutive birdies from the fourth. His run ended with a bogey on the par-3 eighth, but he bounced back with a birdie on the ninth to make the turn at minus-9.

The nine-time winner on the Champions Tour continued his hot play on the back nine with birdies at 10 and 11. Funk poured in a 25-footer for birdie on the 12th to make it four in a row.

Funk got up and down for birdie on the par-5 14th and that gave him a piece of the lead with Pavin. Funk followed a pair of pars with a 2-putt birdie on the par-5 17th and a 7-foot birdie effort at the last.

"I just hit my irons really close. I had seven of my birdies were a combined 11 or 12 feet, we added up. That was no stress there, other than making a couple 3-footers. Then I made a couple other ones," Funk said. "I just hit the ball really well with the irons today. I was kind of keyed in on those."

Goydos, who was two groups behind Funk, flew out of the gate with three birdies in the first four holes. Another birdie at the seventh moved him to 10-under.

At the 11th, Goydos spun his approach back into the hole for eagle. After a birdie on No. 14, he drained an 18-footer for birdie at the 15th.

Goydos parred his next two holes before knocking in a 4-footer for birdie at the 18th to join Funk in the lead.

"I played really good. I kind of finished a little circus-like. I made a couple birdies, but I made a bad shot on 16 and hit a series of bad shots on 17 and was saved by the putt. I played 18 very well and made a birdie, so I was kind of all over the place," Goydos stated. "All in all, a very good day."

NOTES: Funk and Goydos are among 10 players in the field this week that have previously won in the state of Hawaii ... Funk has won five of the 10 times he had at least a piece of the lead after two rounds, while Goydos has a piece of the lead after two rounds for the first time in his Champions Tour career.
