Homan birdies final hole to win Staal Foundation Open

Thunder Bay, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Wes Homan drained a 6-foot birdie putt on the last hole to defeat playing partner Greg Eason and win the Staal Foundation Open on Sunday.

Homan, who held a 2-shot lead heading into the final round, fired a 1-under 71 on Sunday at Whitewater Country Club and he finished at 17-under-par 271. The win is Homan's first on the PGA Tour Canada.

Eason put the pressure on Homan at the par-5 last. After spending most of the day just one shot back of Homan, Eason knocked his third shot at No. 18 to about two feet. He later tapped that in for a birdie and a share of the lead at 16-under.

Homan narrowly lipped out on a chip that would have been an eagle, and the ball ran about six feet past the hole. He settled himself and poured the birdie putt in for the win.

Jeffrey Corr, also playing in the final group with Homan and Eason, ended his final day with a 3-under 69 and finished the week three shots back of Homan at 14-under 274.

Daniel Miernicki (68) came in fourth place, but he was six shots back of the lead at 11-under 277. John Catlin (68) and Joel Dahmen (69) were right behind him at 10-under and they tied for fifth. Dahmen has won two events on tour this year.

Both Homan and Eason had relatively quiet front nines and things did not really get interesting until they made the turn. Homan made just one birdie at No. 2 and closed out the rest of his front nine with pars. Eason dropped a shot with a bogey at No. 3, but he got that shot back with a birdie at No. 7. He finished his front nine at even par for the day.

Now three shots ahead of Eason, Homan had his first blemish with a bogey at No. 11. Eason made birdie at the par-5 12th and Homan's lead was just one.

The duo parred the next two holes and they each dropped another shot with bogeys at the par-3 15th. Eason later dropped in a big birdie at No. 16, but Homan did not want to give up his lead as he responded with a birdie of his own on the same hole.

After they both parred No. 17, Eason needed to make something happen along with a little help from Homan at the last, but Homan was not to be denied as he made the clutch birdie putt for the win.

NOTES: In seven events this year, Homan has missed the cut in three of them. He also had a top-5 finish when he ended tied for fourth at the Bayview Place Island Savings Open ... Eason has never won on the PGA Tour Canada. His best finish before this event was a tie for fifth at the Syncrude Boreal Open ... Homan earned $27,000 with this win ... The PGA Tour Canada will take a week off before heading to the ATB Financial Classic, where Joe Panzeri won last year.

Golf Course of the Week

Pine Hollow Golf Club

Originally designed by Maurice Brackett and opened in 1968, Pine Hollow got a nice renovation back in 2001. The course features numerous dogleg holes with plenty of risk and reward opportunities, along with a pair of driveable par-4 holes. This is a nice and affordable test of golf.
