This Week in Golf -- April 10-13

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - PGA TOUR - MASTERS TOURNAMENT, Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia - The season's first major is upon us and it's time for Adam Scott to return his green jacket to Augusta National.

Scott will look to become the first repeat Masters champion since Tiger Woods 2001-02.

The Australian took down 2009 champion Angel Cabrera on the second playoff hole last year to win his first major championship. Scott birdied the 18th in regulation with Cabrera watching from the fairway.

Cabrera was undaunted, stuffing his approach within three feet and kicking it in for a closing birdie to reach 9-under and force the playoff. Both players got up and down for par on the first extra hole.

On No. 10, the second extra hole, Scott poured in a 12-footer for birdie and the win. It was his ninth win on the PGA Tour.

The big news entering this week is the absence of world No. 1 Tiger Woods, who is recovering from back surgery and is out of action for a couple months. It's the first time in his career the four-time Masters champion will miss Augusta

The field consists of 96 players, including 56 of the top 60 from the world rankings. Of the 96 participants, 23 are playing the Masters for the first time.

Woods isn't the only injured player. Phil Mickelson is recovering from an oblique injury, while Henrik Stenson has been playing with a sore wrist since last year, and Jason Day recently had a cortisone shot on his injured left thumb.

Kevin Stadler won the Phoenix Open earlier this year to set up a potential pairing with his father, Craig. The elder Stadler won the Masters in 1982, and says this will likely be his final year as a competitor. They are the first father-son duo to play in the same Masters.

ESPN has lengthy coverage on Thursday and Friday, before CBS takes over for the weekend.

The PGA Tour heads to South Carolina next week for the RBC Heritage, where Graeme McDowell beat Webb Simpson in a playoff last year.

WEB.COM TOUR

EL BOSQUE MEXICO CHAMPIONSHIP, El Bosque Golf Club, Guanajuato, Mexico - Michael Putnam needed two good rounds last year to win the Mexico Open. He opened with an 8-under 64 and closed with a 6-under 66 en route to winning by two.

Putnam ended at 13-under par and won for the second time on the Web.com Tour. His other win was back in 2010. He is not back in the field this week, but two of the players who shared second place last year are -- Whee Kim and Alex Prugh.

This will be the seventh year this event has been part of the Web.com Tour schedule. None of the previous six winners are in the field this week.

After a week off, the Web.com Tour will return to action in Texas with the WNB Golf Classic, where Alex Aragon closed 66-66 last year to rally for a 1-shot win over Byron Smith.
