English cruises to win in Mexico



Playa del Carmen, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Harris English fired a 6-under- par 65 on Sunday and cruised to a 4-stroke win at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

English finished 72 holes on El Camaleon Golf Course at 21-under-par 263 for his second PGA Tour victory, with the other coming at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in June.

"It was an awesome win," English said in a televised interview. "I was a lot more comfortable out there than I was in Memphis a couple months ago ... It was my first time in Mexico and it will always be a memory."

Brian Stuard shot 67 and took solo second place at 17-under 267, while Rory Sabbatini (70), Jason Bohn (68) and Chris Stroud (68) shared third at minus-16.

Third-round leader Robert Karlsson carded a 1-over 72 and dropped into a tie for sixth at 15-under. He ended alongside Charles Howell III (69), Justin Hicks (67) and Justin Leonard (67).

"I've been struggling a bit with the long driver and over the long shots in general and usually you get found out sooner or later," said Karlsson. "But I'm happy to have a great taste of being in the last group for 36 holes. I was in it even though I wasn't playing fantastic the last two days."

The third round was completed Sunday morning as the tournament finally caught up following weather delays on Thursday and Friday. English trailed Karlsson by one shot when the fourth round began and that margin remained through the turn.

English mixed four birdies and a bogey over his opening nine holes, but Karlsson, playing in the same group, countered with a birdie and an eagle at the par-5 fifth.

The back nine was a different story.

English birdied three of his first four holes after the turn, starting with a gain at No. 10 and following with a 27-footer for birdie and the lead at the 11th. He closed the run with a tap-in birdie at the 13th.

Karlsson parred the 10th and 11th, but he unraveled from there, stumbling to consecutive bogeys from the 12th and a double bogey at the par-4 14th.

With Karlsson out of the picture, English's lead stretched to four strokes through 13 holes and the 24-year-old cruised from there, parring his final five holes to seal his second win of the calendar year.

"I hit the ball really well all week," said English. "It got a little windy the first couple of days and I struggled a little bit with my driver, but I found it coming down the stretch and hit some good shots."

NOTES: English tied for seventh at the CIMB Classic in October. He's made the cut in all four of his starts this season ... Rory McIlroy (6) is the only player 25 or under with more PGA Tour wins than English ... The field played lift, clean and place on Sunday ... Twenty-five of the 46 tournaments this calendar year have had a weather delay.
