Harman hangs on to win John Deere Classic

Silvis, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian Harman fired a 5-under 66 on Sunday as he hung on for a 1-stroke victory at the John Deere Classic.

Harman collected his first career win on the PGA Tour at 22-under-par 262. With the victory, Harman earned the final spot up for grabs for the British Open next week.

"I brought my passport and a couple of jackets. I can't wait to get on that plane," Harman said after the win.

Zach Johnson, who won this event in 2012, carded a 7-under 64 during his final round at TPC Deere Run to finish alone in second place at 21-under 263.

Jhonattan Vegas (65) and Jerry Kelly (66) shared third at 19-under, while Tim Clark (67) and Scott Brown (68) tied for fifth at minus-18.

Jordan Spieth (66), the 2013 champion, Bo Van Pelt (65), Ryan Moore (68) and Johnson Wagner (68) shared seventh at 16-under 268.

Harman entered the final round with a 1-stroke lead over Stricker, who was joined at 16-under by Brown and Moore before Harman stuck his second shot at the par-5 second to four feet and converted his eagle to move three clear of the field at minus-19.

After Johnson moved into sole possession of second place with a trio of birdies at the second, fourth and sixth, Harman tripped to a bogey at the fifth to fall to 18-under and cut his advantage to just one.

Clark then briefly claimed a share of the lead with back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh, but a bogey at the ninth dropped him off the pace.

As Clark fell behind, Brown birdied the seventh and ninth, while Johnson poured in an 8-foot birdie at the 10th to make it a 3-way tie at 18-under.

Harman answered with birdie putts of 30 and 16 feet at the ninth and 10th to reclaim the outright lead, but Johnson fired back with a pair of short birdie efforts at the 13th and 14th to again meet him atop the leaderboard at 20- under.

Harman did not waver, however, as he retook the lead for good with a birdie at the 14th.

He followed that with a 15-foot birdie at the 15th and after Johnson pulled back within one when he got up and down for birdie from a greenside bunker at the par-5 17th, Harman converted his third straight birdie at the 16th to again claim a 2-shot lead at 23-under.

Johnson parred the last to end at 21-under, allowing Harman to hang on for the win despite a bogey at the 18th.

NOTES: Harman is the 14th player in his 20s to win on the PGA Tour this season. There were 12 different winners in their 20s last season ... Harman is the first lefthander to win the John Deere Classic since Sam Adams in 1973 ... Harman has just one career start in a major, when he missed the cut a the 2012 U.S. Open ... Johnson has now posted 24 consecutive rounds in the 60s at TPC Deere Run.
