Langley moves into Travelers lead

Cromwell, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Langley carded a 5-under 65 on Friday to claim a 1-stroke lead after two rounds of the Travelers Championship.

Langley finished 36 holes at TPC River Highlands at 11-under-par 129. He is seeking his first career win on the PGA Tour.

"I just had really good tempo," Langley said. "The name of the game out here is putting. I putted quite well. I feel confident on the greens. My speed is pretty well dialed in."

Michael Putnam fired the low round of the day with a 7-under 63 to vault into a share of second place with Harris English (64) and K.J. Choi (65) at 10- under 130.

First-round leader Brendan Steele managed a 1-under 69 during his second round to fall into a tie for fifth at 9-under 131. He is joined by Ryan Moore (68), Eric Axley (67) and Jamie Lovemark (63).

Dustin Johnson (66), who shared fourth place at the U.S. Open last week, is alone in ninth at minus-8.

Langley started on the back nine and parred the 10th before capping back-to- back birdies at the 11th and 12th with a 14-foot putt to move to 8-under.

He would go on to birdie the 14th and 16th from inside 10 feet to reach 10- under at the turn.

After converting a 12-foot birdie putt at the first, Langley tripped to a 3- putt double-bogey at the second to fall back to minus-9.

But he bounced right back with a birdie at the third and later recorded birdies at the sixth and eighth around a bogey at the seventh to reach 11- under. He parred the ninth finish there and claim the clubhouse lead.

"My iron play has been really solid. I'm giving myself a lot of short putts for birdie," said Langley. "I struck the ball pretty well, kept the ball in play and putted pretty well."

No one in the afternoon was able to surpass him.

Putnam started his impressive round with a bogey at the 10th, but he would not drop another shot for the remainder of the day and bounced right back with consecutive birdies at the 11th and 12th.

He then rolled in three short gains in a 4-hole stretch from the 14th to move to 7-under.

After converting another birdie at the second, Putnam followed an 11-foot birdie putt at the fifth with a 2-putt birdie at the sixth to pull within a shot of the lead. He parred the final three holes to remain there.

English countered a lone bogey with seven birdies to also end at 10-under, while Choi had six birdies and a bogey during his second round to earn his share of second place.

NOTES: Langley is trying to become the fifth straight player to make this tournament his first career win ... Langley holds the second-round lead for the first time in his career.
