Reed hangs on to win Humana Challenge

La Quinta, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - After three record-setting days, Patrick Reed managed a 1-under 71 on Sunday and hung on for a 2-stroke win at the Humana Challenge.

Reed finished at 28-under-par 260. He had set the tour record for lowest 54- hole score in relation to par after starting the tournament with three straight 63s.

The victory was Reed's second on the PGA Tour. He led by seven at the start of the final round, and his winning margin of two strokes was the closest anyone got in the final round on the Palmer Private Course at PGA West.

"I told my caddie I'm not watching scoreboards until the back nine. That's when I would change my game plan if needed," Reed stated. "I felt like I got off to a great start today. Once I got to back nine, I kind of coasted."

Ryan Palmer grabbed second place at 26-under 262 after a final-round 63. Zach Johnson, who won the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, fired a 10-under 62 to soar into a share of third place at minus-25. He was joined there by Justin Leonard, who closed with a 65.

Brian Stuard also shot 65 on Sunday to grab fifth at 24-under 264. Bill Haas, the 2010 winner, posted a 5-under 67. He ended alongside Brendon Todd (69) in sixth at minus-23. Chad Collins fired a 65 to take eighth at 22-under 266.

Reed converted a 13-foot birdie effort on the second to maintain his 7-stroke lead. After a pair of pars, he missed the green at the par-3 fifth and chipped to nine feet.

Last year's Wyndham Championship winner 2-putted for bogey from there and his lead was suddenly five ahead of Leonard and Todd. Both players had birdied three in a row from second, but Todd also bogeyed the fifth.

Reed bounced back with a 2-putt birdie on the par-5 sixth. He missed the green on the seventh and that bogey trimmed his lead to four over Todd. Reed again erased that mistake with a short birdie putt on the eighth.

Around the turn, Reed came up well short of the 10th green on his approach from a fairway bunker. That led to another bogey and Reed's lead was four.

At the par-5 11th, Reed 2-putted for birdie to stay four clear of Leonard and Todd, who both birdied the same hole. Reed's tee shot on the par-3 12th found a greenside bunker.

He blasted out, but his ball hung up in the rough. Reed got up and down for bogey from there. His lead was three at that point. As he parred the next two holes, Johnson climbed within two as he birdied the final five holes.

Reed's tee shot on the par-3 15th bounced out of the rough and onto the green. He poured in a 17-foot birdie putt there to extend his lead back to three. He closed with three straight pars to seal the win.

"You can get in trouble if you get too aggressive out here," Reed said. "Sundays are a little harder and I wanted to post a decent number, and I did enough today."

Palmer started the final round 10 strokes off the lead. He started his climb with birdies on the second and fifth. Three birdies in a 4-hole span from the eighth moved Palmer to 22-under.

The three-time PGA Tour winner notched back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15. Palmer drained a 16-foot eagle try at the last to end two back.

NOTES: Reed earned $1,026 million for the victory ... Reed moved to 2-0 when owning at least a piece of the 54-hole lead ... He joins Johnson, Henrik Stenson and Jimmy Walker as the players with multiple wins since last year's Wyndham Championship ... Reed joined Rik Massengale as the only two wire-to- wire winners of this event ... Ken Duke had a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th ... After nine 63s, Johnson's final-round 62 was the low round of the week ... The tour heads to La Jolla next week for the Farmers Insurance Open, where world No. 1 and defending champion Tiger Woods makes his season debut.
