Putnam, Petrovic share the lead in Canada

Ile Bizard, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Putnam and Tim Petrovic fired matching 6-under 64s on Thursday to share the lead at the RBC Canadian Open.

Petrovic has one career win on the PGA Tour, while Putnam is seeking his first win on tour.

Kyle Stanley and amateur Taylor Pendrith each carded a 5-under 65 at Royal Montreal Golf Club to share second place.

Former Masters winner Charl Schwartzel headlines a group of 11 players tied for fifth at 4-under 66. He is joined by Justin Hicks, Charlie Wi, Greg Chalmers, Nick Watney, Robert Allenby, Troy Merritt, Bo Van Pelt, Dicky Pride, Jason Bohn and Joel Dahmen.

Putnam was the first of the co-leaders to take the course and he parred his first two holes before he rolled in a short birdie putt at the 12th. He later converted another birdie effort at the 17th to make the turn at 2-under.

Three gains in a 4-hole stretch from the second moved him to 5-under, and he reached minus-6 with a 5-foot birdie putt at the eighth. He parred the ninth to remain there.

Petrovic also posted a bogey-free round and quickly reached 3-under with three straight birdies from the second, including a 59-foot putt at the fourth.

A 12-foot birdie putt at the seventh moved him to 4-under, and he reached minus-6 with a 3-foot eagle at the 12th. He parred his final six holes to maintain his share of the lead.

"That was my best round in a couple years I think," said Petrovic. "I got here yesterday, so today was kind of my practice round. Go figure."

Stanley had earlier started on the back nine and opened his round with a 2- foot birdie putt at the 10th.

After adding another gain at the 12th, he capped back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th with a 20-foot putt to move to 4-under. He stayed hot with another lengthy birdie putt at the 17th to make the turn at minus-5.

He cooled around the turn with three straight pars before tripping to a bogey at the third.

But he got that stroke back with a 10-foot birdie at the sixth and parred his final three holes to claim the clubhouse lead.

"It's nice for me to get a round like this because it kind of shows that I'm working on some of the right things," Stanley said. "It hasn't been my best year by any means, but I'm starting to play a little bit better."

Pendrith countered a pair of bogeys with seven birdies during his opening round to earn his share of second place.

NOTES: Petrovic's lone win on tour came at the 2005 Zurich Classic of New Orleans ... Petrovic earned his place in the field as an alternate when Benjamin Alvarado withdrew prior to the start of his round ... Putnam won twice on the Web.com Tour last season ... The last first-round leader to go on to win the RBC Canadian Open was Scott Piercy in 2012 ... James Driscoll withdrew after completing his first round.
