Destination: Primland, Meadows of Dan, Va.
Drive time: Approximately 3 hours; 155 miles from downtown Raleigh.
Course: The Highland Course.
Comments: Nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is more than just a golf resort, but a 12,000-acre playground that includes hunting, fly-fishing, hiking, horseback riding and sporting clays.
Designed by renowned architect Daniel Steel, the Highland Course has dazzled since it first opened in 2006. In 2007, Travel and Leisure Golf named it one of America’s best new courses. In January, Golf Digest selected it as one of the best public courses in America for $75 and over.
The course sits atop one of the resort’s highest ridges and offers breathtaking vistas at nearly every hole.
Green fees are $200 for the 2008 season, but you get what you pay for. Tee times are only available May through October, and are made only every 30 minutes to ensure a leisurely pace of play.
