GYM: Ham, Ouellette Highlight Home Opener Versus Maryland

— For the first time since the 2005 season, the NC State gymnastics team finished the meet tied with its opponent as the Wolfpack and the Maryland Terrapins each concluded the night with a final team score of 195.000. State trailed Maryland 146.200 - 146.075 after two events, but narrowed the margin in the last two events before ending in a tie.

The last time NC State tied an opponent was Feb. 2, 2005 when the Pack tied North Carolina with a final score of 194.475 in Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State began the meet on vault, recording its highest team score on the night with a 49.025. Junior Diahanna Ham paced the group with a 9.9, the first score of 9.9 achieved by a Pack gymnast on the season. Ham's score was also good for second in the event. Stephanie Ouellette, a junior from Columbia, Md., contributed the next highest score for State with a 9.875. Morgan Johnson posted a score of 9.775 on vault, while freshmen Michaela Woodford and Brittni Watkins scored 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.

The second event of the night for the Pack was the uneven bars, where the team scored a 48.450. Ouellette paced the team in the event with a 9.825 to claim first place. Woodford scored the second best score for State with a 9.750. Junior Heidi Ffield, who was competing in the second meet of her career, recorded a 9.725.

On balance beam, Hannah Fallanca headlined the group for the Wolfpack with a 9.8, en route to claiming third place in the event. Ouellette and Woodford both recorded 9.75s, while Ham posted a 9.675. State completed the event with a team score of 48.600.

In the final rotation of the night, the Pack turned in a team score of 48.925 on floor exercise. Ham and Watkins led the group with 9.875s, followed by Woodford with a 9.8. Junior Kristen Harabedian posted the next highest score with a 9.750, while sophomore Lane Jarred notched a 9.625.

NC State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 18, when it travels to the University of New Hampshire. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
