GYM: State Gymnastics tallies a 195.650 in home opener

The NC State gymnastics team tied the seventh-highest team score in school history on the balance beam, as the squad recorded a total score of 195.650 in its home opener Friday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum.

“We were really pleased with how everybody did today,” said head coach Mark Stevenson.

Eighth-ranked Michigan totaled a 196.800 to win the meet, as State finished second in the team standings. North Carolina finished third overall with a score of 192.450, while Towson finished fourth at 191.325.

Senior Diahanna Ham led the way for the Pack on vault with a second-place score of 9.875. Stephanie Ouellette and Brittni Watkins each tallied a score of 9.825 for State, while Hannah Fallanca contributed a 9.700. As a team, State finished with a score of 48.850.

The Pack next moved to the uneven parallel bars, where it scored a team total of 48.825. Watkins and senior Kristen Harabedian led the way for the squad, as each gymnast performed a routine that scored a 9.800. Ouellette recorded a 9.775 on her routine, while Ham scored a 9.750. Senior Heidi Ffield also contributed with a score of 9.700.

At the halfway point of the meet, NC State was in second place with a total of 98.200, trailing Michigan and leading North Carolina and Towson.

Watkins, Ham and Lane Jarred each recorded a new career-best on the balance beam, as the Wolfpack's team total of 49.350 tied for seventh all-time and was the highest score since 2005. Watkins once again led the way with a score of 9.900, while Ham and Jarred each posted a score of 9.875. Fallanca and Ouellette scored a 9.850, while Harabedian scored a 9.800. Watkins, Ham and Jarred finished as the top-three performers on the apparatus.

“That was one of [Ham’s] best routines on the balance beam since UCLA a few years ago,” Stevenson said. “She is doing a great job of putting her mind where it needs to be and getting the job done.”

The Pack concluded the evening with the floor exercise, where Watkins led the way with a beautiful routine that totaled a score of 9.850. Jarred earned a a 9.800 and Ellen Marion totaled a 9.700. State posted a team score of 48.625 on the event.

In the all-around competition, Watkins finished second overall with a total of 39.375.

Up next, the Wolfpack will travel to Kent, Ohio for a dual meet against Kent State on Sunday, Jan. 19, alongside the NC State wrestling team. The Beauty and the Beast meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
