— The North Carolina gymnastics team took third place at the Chicago Style Invitational Meet last Friday, Feb. 7. The Tar Heels, totaling a score of 192.075, advanced past the University of Illinois- Chicago, but fell short to Boise State and Bowling Green who placed first and second.

Although Carolina struggled to maintain focus away from home, it remains positive by focusing on some of its strong individual performances from Friday night, as well as the time it has this week to improve.

“We did not have as strong of a performance as we did the week before at our home meet [versus Pittsburgh on Jan. 31]. However, we had some individuals that did very well,” said Coach Derek Galvin. “Megan Marenghi, one of our freshman, had her personal bests on both bars, with a 9.8, and balance beam, with a 9.775.”

In addition to Marenghi’s two personal best performances, freshman Margaret Brown stepped up to compete on vault and floor, where she scored a 9.55 and 9.325. Acacia Cosentino earned a 9.8 on bars, one of Carolina’s top scores of the night. Josselyn Mackey complimented Cosentino and Marenghi on bars, adding a solid 9.725. Sarah Peterson, Kristin Aloi and Lexi Cappalli- competing first, second and third on vault- all scored a 9.725.

Unfortunately for the Heels, both all-arounders, Haley Watts and Cappalli, uncharacteristically suffered falls: Watts on vault, and Cappalli on bars. However, both athletes held it together to perform fairly well on their other three events.

The team has had to adapt and utilize the full depth of its roster the past few weeks due to injuries suffered by senior co-captain Michelle Ikoma and freshman standout Christina Pheil.

“We’re nursing some injuries, but we’re going to regroup and train hard this week,” Galvin said. “Our next competition is at NC State and we hope to have a healthier team by [then], so that we can get a strong, away meet score.”

The Tar Heels head to Raleigh this Saturday, Feb. 15 for a rematch against the Wolfpack in its Sweetheart Invitational. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
