GYM: Watkins posts a 9.925 on Vault at Kent State

Posted January 20

Sophomore Brittni Watkins tallied the 12th score of 9.925 in program history on vault Sunday afternoon, as the NC State gymnastics team competed in a Beauty and the Beast meet at Kent State alongside the NC State wrestling team. Kent State won the meet with a team score of 195.400, while the Wolfpack posted a team total of 194.150.

The Wolfpack started the meet on the uneven parallel bars, where Stephanie Ouellette and Watkins each posted a score of 9.800 to lead the squad and tie for first place. As a team, the Pack posted a score of 48.075.

The Pack next moved to vault, where each of State’s six gymnasts in the lineup scored a 9.775 or higher. Watkins, a native of Albany, N.Y., captured first place with a career best 9.925. Senior Diahanna Ham also scored a 9.900 to finish in second place in the individual competition, while Ouellette and freshman Courtney Bisbe each contributed a 9.800. In addition, Hannah Fallanca and Ellen Marion both posted a score of 9.775. As a team, NC State recorded a season-best score of 49.200, which ties as seventh best in program history.

“We had really good vaults today and three of them stuck the landing,” Stevenson said. “That makes a huge difference and I was pretty happy with how they did.”

At the midway point of the meet, NC State trailed the Golden Flashes, 97.825 – 97.275.

On the floor exercise, the squad totaled a score of 48.850. Watkins and junior Lane Jarred each performed a routine that scored a 9.825, while Marion tallied a 9.750. Fallanca and senior Kristen Harabedian also posted a score of 9.725 to contribute to the team total.

State concluded the meet on the balance beam, where it recorded a team total of 48.025. Watkins paced the squad and finished first overall with a 9.850, while Ham and Harabedian each tallied a 9.725 on the apparatus.

Watkins captured the all-around title for the second time this season with a career high, 39.400.

“Brittni had a career high again today on the all-around,” Stevenson said. “She’s doing a great job and is looking great.”

Up next, the Wolfpack will host a Beauty and the Beast meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, alongside the NC State wrestling team inside Reynolds Coliseum. The gymnastics team will host Texas Woman’s and William & Mary.
