Harper out as coach of Wolfpack women

Posted March 26, 2013

— Kellie Harper is out as the coach of the North Carolina State University women's basketball team, the university announced Tuesday.

“We thank Kellie for her service to our women’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow. “We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

Harper finished with a 70-64 record (23-39 in the ACC) in four seasons in Raleigh. Her teams made the NCAA tournament just once, in her first season. They ended the 2012-13 season 17-17 (7-11) Sunday with a loss to James Madison in the second round of the Postseason Women's NIT.

Assistant coach Ken Griffin will lead the team while the university conducts a national coaching search.

Yow is highly demanding of her coaches. I sometimes have to wonder about her micro-manager style. It usually get's them in the end.

Well I can honestly say that Coach Harper represented NC State very well. Having met her in a social setting, I found her to be a moral and ethical person. She has a winning attitude and she will have a long career after putting NC State behind her.

You realize that a lot of student athletes do not major in those programs, correct? Or that NCSU actually has other programs that are very popular with athletes ie Business Management, Sports Management, etc, etc.? It probably doesn't help that we have Duke and Carolina down the road recruiting against us...kind of like in men's bballl. We even have Af/Am studies, if that helps.

Kay Yow had a wonderful run with great players many, many, many years ago. She lost her groove and thus a failing program happened... but no one noticed and she remained at NC State as an in effective coach because of WHO she was. Maybe out of loyality or because why fire a older women with not many years left???? Harper is a wonderful young coach who is coaching the last of KAY YOWS recruits. She is a Pat Summitt prodigy... firing her was not a smart thing to do. The issue really isn't Kay Yow or Harpers lack of abilities, but what NC State has to offer accdemically... they don't offer what most college do curriculum wise... while they offer great programs.... who wants to settle on a program just to come to NC State and play basketball or any other sport. SO unless you are going to State for their wonderful Engenieering program, Agricultural, Textile, or Vet program it's really not the school a young athlete would pick when making their decisions for college. I am not an NC State hater , I just see NC State as a school for a "specific" education direction. Most people enter college with an undecided direction and if none of those are of interest then they are looking to those colleges where they have more options academically. Harper will take the next program she has to the top with a school who will support her stye and not look for a quick fix to years of ruin. GO K Jolly Harper!!!!

Wow, is there anybody that Yow likes? Maybe she should take over coaching all of the teams. I guess Yow feels that she, herself, is untouchable, but rest assured, Yow's day will come too.

Run down her program? Sorry to say, but that was already done before Harper arrived.

Debbie is just doing her job. For the amount of money these coaches are getting paid, results are expected.

And there will be plenty of coaches lining up for the opening.

"Doctor" Yow gone too, eventually? We can only hope. She is a farce as an AD. Started off her time at State by slamming Gary Williams, a national championship coach. Fires winning coaches like Coach OB, and now fires the starting point guard on a national champion (at UT). Cancels the football series with ECU and effectively calls Pirate fans schizoid (that's especially funny coming from her). Coach Gottfried had, indeed, better watch his back. I'll bet her alma mater snaps up Kelly Jolly Harper quickly. If Chairman Yow thinks she can find a better coach, perhaps she should coach the State womens' team herself.
