Hatchell nominated for Kay Yow award

Posted January 17, 2014

North Carolina women's head basketball coach Syliva Hatchell and a fellow Tar Heel cancer survivor are among the nominees for the inaugural Kay Yow Champion award sponsored by the Greater Raleigh Sports Council.

Hatchell, who has yet to coach a game this season, has been in treatment for leukemia. In an appearance at the Raleigh Sports Club Wednesday Hatchell said her cancer is in remission and she hopes to return to the court in time for the ACC Tournament March 5-9.

Two of the three nominees are Tar Heels. Hatchell is joined on the ballot by

Chase Jones, who played baseball at UNC and graduated in 2011, battled brain cancer as a freshman and has since founded the Vs. Cancer Foundation, which raises funds to battle childhood cancers.

The award honors "a leader in the business community who is a champion for their organization, a champion for the community, and most importantly a champion for others."

The third nomination is a joint one for Terrence and Torry Holt for their work with The Holt Brothers Foundation.

The public can vote for the Kay Yow Champion and other awards to be presented at the annual Greater Raleigh Sports Council Evening of Champions on Feb. 12.

Hatchell is one of the most genuine of all coaches at UNC--for damm sure.

She doesn't wavor in anything that she states to the media, Self composed. Honest. Maybe Roy should pick up a few keys or cues from her. When Roy wins...he sounds professional. Like a coach at a major University should most times. Losing. He embarrasses me sometimes. He's on one more year; in my opinion. With all of these so-called AA's, he still can't win without speed.

I knew when WRAL changed this forum that some wouldn't write as much.

To lose the numbers and a little status makes a difference.

We see don't we. I do. Heh. Heh.

I have thoroughly enjoyed writing on FaceBook since December. Still glad that WRAL didn't close it down.

I admire all listed in this one. I'm totally happy that Hatchell is on the rebound. Jones and the Holt Brothers have done an incredible job to make a huge difference. I vote to have this huge Honor shared by all listed. I haven't been afraid of anything in my entire life; except the dreaded word.
