Hatchell-Stringer match-up highlights women's ACC-Big Ten Challenge

Posted June 4, 2014

Coach Sylvia Hatchell signals a defense during the second semifinal of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., Saturday, March 9, 2013.

— Duke and North Carolina will each be on the road this year for the women’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge and will play on opposite days. NC State will host Minnesota on Dec. 3 as part of an eight-game opening night of the challenge.

Duke will also play on Dec. 3 as they visit Nebraska. UNC will play Dec. 4 at Rutgers.

The UNC-Rutgers game will pit two Hall of Fame coaches with over 900 wins in Sylvia Hatchell and C. Vivian Stringer. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. UNC is 5-2 all-time in the Challenge and has won their last two.

Duke and Nebraska will meet for the second time in school history. The Blue Devils, who hold a 4-1 record all time in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, beat Nebraska in the Sweet 16 in the 2012-13 season, 53-45.

NC State is just 2-4 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge all-time but is coming off a win last year against Northwestern. The Wolfpack also hold a 3-1 edge in the all-time series against Minnesota, winning in their only previous meeting at Reynolds Coliseum.

All 14 Big Ten teams and 14 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2014 challenge, including Louisville, which will join the ACC on July 1. The Cardinals will play Dec. 4 at home against Iowa.

Newly departed from the ACC Maryland will play new ACC member Notre Dame in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Dec. 3.

The ACC is 6-0-1 in seven challenges to date and hold a 48-32 overall record.
