Game blog: Rodon, NC State top UNC in CWS opener

Omaha, Neb. — FINAL: NC State 8, UNC 1: Carlos Rodon threw a five-hit complete game, and NC State scored five runs off UNC starter Kent Emanuel Sunday as the Wolfpack advanced in the winner’s bracket of the College World Series with a 8-1 win.
Rodon added eight strikeouts in the performance
UNC will play Tuesday at 3 p.m. in an elimination game against the loser of LSU/UCLA. NC State will play the winner of the LSU/UCLA game Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Mid 9: NC State 8, UNC 0: NC State loaded the bases with nobody out and were able to plate two insurance runs as they take a 8-0 lead to the bottom of the frame.
End 8: NC State 6, UNC 0: UNC got a leadoff single from Brian Holberton but Alex Raburn promptly grounded into a double play and UNC went quietly in the eighth inning.
Mid 8: NC State 6, UNC 0: NC State saw three different UNC pitchers in the eighth inning and managed one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brett Austin that scored Logan Ratledge.

End 7: NC State 5, UNC 0: UNC managed to get two men on base on Carlos Rodon, but Michael Russell grounded into an inning-ending double play to Grant Clyde and the game moves to the eighth, 5-0.
Mid 7: NC State 5, UNC 0: Chris Munnelly hit two batters in the seventh inning, but got a double play and a fly out and the game heads to the stretch, still 5-0.
End 6: NC State 5, UNC 0: For the fourth time in six innings, UNC was sat down in order as Carlos Rodon continues to spin a 1-hit gem.
Mid 6: NC State 5, UNC 0: Chris Munnelly, the third pitcher used for UNC today, pitched into, out of and around trouble spots in the sixth, but got Tarran Senay swinging to end the frame.
End 5: NC State 5, UNC 0: Brian Holberton broke up Carlos Rodon's no hitter with a two-out single up the middle but Rodon followed by striking out Mike Zolk and the Wolfpack take a 5-0 lead to the 6th.
Mid 5: NC State 5, UNC 0: NC State put two men on in the fifth inning with two outs, but Chris McCue got Logan Ratledge swinging to end the threat.
End 4: NC State 5, UNC 0: Carlos Rodon did not record a strikeout in the fourth, but did sit the Tar Heels down in order and has retired 12 in a row.
Mid 4: NC State 5, UNC 0: Chris McCue sat the NC State hitters down 1-2-3 in the fourth and Carlos Rodon will take the mound in the bottom half staked to the 5-0 lead.
End 3: NC State 5, UNC 0: Carlos Rodon struck out five Tar Heels batters the first time through the order and has UNC hitless as he is staked to a 5-run lead after three.
Mid 3: NC State 5, UNC 0: Grant Clyde got a 3rd inning, 2-out rally started with an RBI single to left field. That was followed by a Brett Williams RBI double, a Bryan Adametz RBI single and a Logan Ratledge RBI single and NC State has opened up a 5-0 lead.
UNC starter Kent Emanuel lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out two while throwing 64 pitches. Chris McCue came on with an inherited runner and walked the first man he faced.
All five of NC State's runs have come with two outs.
End 2: NC State 1, UNC 0: Carlos Rodan had a workmanlike second inning, recording two more strikeouts and getting a lazy flyout. Rodon is up to four K's on the day.
Mid 2: NC State 1, UNC 0: UNC pitcher Kent Emanuel has seen hit pitch count hit 40 in the first two innings, but he wasted a Jake Armstrong single in the second and the Heels will come to bat trailing 1-0.
End 1: NC State 1, UNC 0: Carlos Rodon pitched around a leadoff walk and struck out two in the bottom of the first and the Wolfpack take a 1-0 lead to the second.
Mid 1: NC State 1, UNC 0: Tarran Senay delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Trea Turner and the Wolfpack grabbed an early 1-0 lead on UNC.
Kent Enamuel got some help as Austin Fincher was called out on a batter's interference as Turner attempted to steal earlier in the inning. Turner ended up swiping secong on a delayed steal with Senay up.
Emanuel recorded two strikeouts on the inning.
Pregame: For UNC, Sunday begins the sixth College World Series quest in Omaha in the last eight years. For NC State, Sunday will be the first game played outside the Eastern Time Zone in more than seven years.
The last time NC State was in Omaha was in 1968. The last time they were away from the east coast was June 4, 2006 when they played in the Austin, Tex., Regional.
Each team will trot out All-American aces as Kent Emanuel (11-3, 2.93 ERA) faces off against Carlos Rodon (9-2, 3.19 ERA).
According to research done by Pack Pride, NC State batters in today’s lineup are a combined 12-for-50 against Emanuel all-time. Nobody has faced the lefty in more than two games.
On the flip side, Rodon has faced the UNC lineup four times over the last two seasons going 1-0 with three no decisions despite only giving up three runs.
