Hellickson, Bulls roughed up by Louisville

Jeremy Hellickson was tagged for a career-high 12 hits over just 2 2/3 innings in his second rehab start as the Durham Bulls fell to Louisville 10-5 at Louisville Slugger Field on Tuesday night.

Armed with a 3-0 lead after a half-inning, Hellickson (L, 0-2) surrendered four hits and two runs in the opening inning, followed by the tying run in the second. Hellickson could not finish the third after five more hits and an error drove his pitch count to his 75-pitch limit. Doug Mathis entered with the Bulls (43-31) trailing 7-3 to work 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Mike Fontenot singled home Vince Belnome in the sixth to slice the deficit to 7-4, but the Bulls wouldn't get any closer.

In the first, Cole Figueroa singled home Brandon Guyer to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Mikie Mahtook then drove a two-run homer to centerfield against Louisville starter Josh Smith (W, 8-1) for a 3-0 lead. Mahtook's blast was his third in the nine games on the Bulls' road trip, with one home run in each of the three cities - Norfolk, Indianapolis and Louisville.

Mahtook finished the night 3-5, while Figueroa, Belnome and Ali Solis each had two hits. Brandon Guyer, in his fourth game of his major league rehab, reached four times thanks to a pair of walks and a single and double.

Louisville (37-36) smacked a season-high 20 hits, including a 5-5 game by Juan Silverio in his Triple-A debut.

The Bulls close out their 10-game road trip Wednesday morning at 11:45am with Nathan Karns (3-3, 4.73) starting opposite Jair Jurrjens (1-2, 4.76).
