Hillctas trip Mudcats to snap streak

Posted August 27, 2014

— The Lynchburg Hillcats scored a 6-2 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium to halt the Mudcats’ winning streak at five games. The Mudcats (32-32, 61-70) fell one game behind the Salem Red Sox, who split a doubleheader with the Frederick Keys, for the Southern Division wildcard. The Hillcats improved to 31-33 and 65-69 overall.

Cole Sulser (4-13) absorbed the loss after he allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief. The right-hander walked one and struck out five. Brady Feigl (3-2) dealt 3 2/3 perfect innings for the winning decision. He whiffed three batters.

The Mudcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead through four innings. Alex Monsalve singled home Yandy Diaz in the opening stanza and Yhoxian Medina drove a single down the left field line to plate Luigi Rodriguez in the fourth.

Starter Mike Clevinger worked through four innings without allowing a hit before surrendering two runs to Lynchburg in the fifth. Jose Martinez and Blake Brown setup the rally by working a pair of walks. Johan Camargo muscled a double to left-center, scoring Martinez, and Yenier Bello brought in Brown on a single to tie the game.

Sulser relieved Clevinger to finish the fifth, but allowed the deciding runs in the sixth. Sean Godfrey singled with one out and scored on a double by Kevin Ahrens. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Ahrens crossed home on a hit by Tyler Tewell for a 4-2 advantage.

The Hillcats capped the scoring in the ninth. Levi Hyams collected a RBI on a hit that scored Camargo and Godfrey doubled around Hyams for the final margin.

The Mudcats continue their series against the Hillcats on Thursday night. It’s ‘Cats/Canes Night and Thirsty Thursday, presented by Natty Greene’s Brewing Co. First pitch against Lynchburg is set for 7 p.m. at Five County Stadium and gates open at 6 p.m. The Mudcats finish off the 2014 slate with three against the Winston-Salem Dash August 30-September 1.
