Hurricanes activate Skinner, place Semin on IR

Posted November 21, 2013

Jeff Skinner (53) before the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL hockey game, Thursday, February 28, 2013 in Raleigh, NC.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner, who has not played since Oct. 24, has been activated from injured reserve, the team announced Thursday.

Skinner is eligible to play in Carolina's Thursday evening (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports South, 99.9 FM The Fan) matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.

Skinner missed 11 games after sustaining an upper-body injury against Minnesota. Prior to his time on injured reserve, Skinner led the Hurricanes in scoring with nine points (3G, 6A). His plus-5 plus/minus rating ranks first on the team.

“He is capable of making the game-breaking play that can put you in the lead or tie a game," head coach Kirk Muller said Wednesday. "He has that different dimension that we need right now as far as all these tight games – having a natural goal scorer, and that’s what he is.”

While Skinner is back, forward Alexander Semin was placed on injured reserve Thursday due to ongoing concussion-related symptoms. Semin was injured Saturday in a loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Canes cannot catch a break...how can anyone expect this team to perform when players are constantly on and off IR...regardless, I hope they destroy the Red Wings...yeah 2002 in still in the back of my mind.

Game in Detroit tonight could be a yawner....Detroit has lost 7 straight games and in 12 games playing at home in the Joe Louis Arena they have only won 3 of 12. On Tuesday night Alfredson didn't play against the Nashville Predators and the Red Wings also lost their highly talented rookie defenseman for 4 - 6 weeks due to a separated shoulder.

One thing to look for will be Detroit's number 44, Todd Bertuzzi, standing in fron to the Canes goalie (Ward?) when Betruzzi is on the ice and Detroit has the puck in the Canes defensive zone..This is not the Red Wing team of old but they still play hard and try to control the puck and, of course, number 13 and 40 still compete for the Red Wings and play all over the ice!
