Hurricanes hire Marcoux as goaltending coach

Posted July 15

The Carolina Hurricanes announced Tuesday the team has hired David Marcoux as its new goaltending coach.

Marcoux spent six years as the goaltending coach for the Calgary Flames between 2003 and 2009, where he helped Flames goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff become a Vezina Trophy and Williams Jennings Trophy winner, as well as a Hart Trophy finalist in 2005-06.

Kiprusoff was competing for the backup goaltender position in San Jose before he was acquired by the Flames in November 2003.

Marcoux will see a familiar face in net in current Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward. The two worked together while with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League as the Canes and Flames shared the affiliate during the 2004-05 work stoppage.

The hiring of Marcoux puts the finishing touches on Hurricanes Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Francis' first coaching staff.

“David has 25 years of experience as a goalie coach, and his results speak for themselves,” said Francis. “This completes what we feel is a very strong and experienced coaching staff.”

A goalie coach? How many coaches does a professional hockey team need? Do they need a coach for every position? If a player is good enough to make it to the NHL, should they still need a position coach? By then I would think they would have been coached to death. High school, college, rec leagues, minor leagues, etc., they have been coached out the roof by the time they get to the NHL.

A coach can coach all he wants but he isn't the one on the ice who has to stop the puck from going in the net. In the end it is the goalies job to do that. Hope the coach can improve Ward's high glove weakness!

Khudobin needs to be the starter. GAA and SVPCT are dramatically better than Ward's. If Marcoux can improve goalies we may end up with a brick wall in goal in Khudobin.

Hope the history Marcoux has with Cam pays dividends.
