The Carolina Hurricanes announced Tuesday the team has hired David Marcoux as its new goaltending coach.
Marcoux spent six years as the goaltending coach for the Calgary Flames between 2003 and 2009, where he helped Flames goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff become a Vezina Trophy and Williams Jennings Trophy winner, as well as a Hart Trophy finalist in 2005-06.
Kiprusoff was competing for the backup goaltender position in San Jose before he was acquired by the Flames in November 2003.
Marcoux will see a familiar face in net in current Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward. The two worked together while with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League as the Canes and Flames shared the affiliate during the 2004-05 work stoppage.
The hiring of Marcoux puts the finishing touches on Hurricanes Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Francis' first coaching staff.
“David has 25 years of experience as a goalie coach, and his results speak for themselves,” said Francis. “This completes what we feel is a very strong and experienced coaching staff.”
