Hurricanes recall Ward

Posted February 2, 2014

The Carolina Hurricanes announced that the team has recalled goaltender Cam Ward from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

Ward, 29, was 1-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in two AHL games for the Checkers during his conditioning stint. The Saskatoon, Sask., native has missed the Hurricanes’ last 14 games due to a lower-body injury and the conditioning assignment. Prior to the injury, Ward (6’1”, 185 lbs.) had posted a 6-7-5 record, a 3.15 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage in 19 games with Carolina this season. He is the Hurricanes franchise’s all-time leader in games played by a goaltender (450), wins (220) and shutouts (21). The Hurricanes drafted Ward in the first round, 25th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

The Hurricanes host the Winnipeg Jets at PNC Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (

He needs to stay in Charlotte

They don't care what we think...we just pay the bills when we buy tickets! I agree with those who say that JR makes the decision regarding the starting goalie. No coach in his right mind would bench a hot goalie in favor of Ward. They should have told Ward that in order to be recalled, he had to win 4 games in a row for the Checkers. Khudobin is doing that...in a much tougher setting.

Could have said the same thing about Gerber/Ward a few years ago. Times change.

A little surprised by the comments no where as anyone said that Cam is back as the starter. Kirk always go with the hot hand. I think Ward will get one of the two starts agains Florida or Montreal in the back to back. Does anyone really think that they are not better with Cam then Peters? That is just crazy!

    "JR is not the coach."

No, but he is the one making the call as to who starts, not Muller. Muller makes the call on the ice.

The way JR manages, we don't need a coach. I will give it to u that he seemed alittle more hands off during January, but now that JR's boy is back, the coach will have little say.

It will be nearly impossible for Ward to play better than Dobi has been playing. I recommend against putting him in goal.

Well, I guess JR wasn't happy about winning, here we go starting another string of loses.................until he hurts his lower body.............AGAIN. Let him play in Charlotte or BF Egypt.

BUSYB97 : "Keep Khudobin in net....when youare flirting with the playoffs so much right now like they are and EVERY game is important, you stick with your hot goalie! JR plays it too "loyal" it seems. If he starts slipping in a game, pull him out immediately like they Peters the last time he started at home."

    JR is not the coach.

After just two games, and they lost half of them? Yah...not ready yet! Although his save percentage was higher.
