Hurricanes return to practice after snowy New York

Posted January 8, 2014

A day after learning that their game against the Buffalo Sabres would be postponed due to whiteout conditions and temperatures near zero, the Carolina Hurricanes made their way back to Raleigh Wednesday.

"Let's just say for Canadians, for people that live up in the north, that was a pretty good one," Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller said Wednesday.

A team spokesman said on Twitter that the team was preparing to leave upstate New York at about 11:45 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Raleigh-Durham International Airport at about 2 p.m. On Instagram, team officials posted footage of a snow-covered highway that was doing its best to slow their departure.

Once back in the Triangle, the Hurricanes practiced ahead of Thursday's 7 p.m. home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The team had a quick skate to get their legs back after a day of inactivity and will still have a morning skate Thursday.

"Look at the positive our guys got a little more rest," Muller said.

Eric Staal and Cam Ward did not practice, as both are day-to-day with injuries. Neither will be available for play the next couple of games and are being treated for their injuries.

The Hurricanes will see where Elias Lindholm is at after playing in the World Juniors and how he is after the morning skate Thursday before deciding if he will play. Riley Nash and Jiri Tlusty are close to coming off the IR and their situation could also change after the morning skate.

When the Canes play the Leafs, it will be Tim Gleason's first game against Carolina since being traded to Toronto on New Years Day.

The National Hockey League has not announced details about a possible makeup day for Tuesday's game against the Sabres.

The last Hurricanes game to be postponed by weather was in January 2000, when a home game against the Phoenix Coyotes was postponed one day due to snow in Raleigh.

I hope that Gleason gets a warm welcome. I loved having him on the team and hated to see him go.

Been a while since I've seen a view of the Kensington aka 'The 33'. That road always was horrible in the winter. It was really fun when the cars ahead of you would spin out and into the wall, then bounce back.
