Hurricanes sign winger Nathan Gerbe

Posted July 26, 2013

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed left winger Nathan Gerbe to one-year, two-way deal, the team announced Friday.

Gerbe, who recorded five goals and five assists in 42 games for the Buffalo Sabres last season, will earn $550,000 if he plays on the NHL team or $150,000 if he plays in the AHL next season. He received a guarantee of $250,000.

The 5-foot-5, 26-year-old was selected by the Sabres in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft. In five seasons, he played 188 games totaling 29 goals and 43 assists (72 points) with a plus/minus of 14.

In the 2008-09 season with AHL’s Portland Pirates, Gerbe won the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award after recording 30 goals and 26 assists in 57 games.

The Oxford, MI, native played three seasons at Boston College, where he lead the nation in goals (35) and points (68) during his junior season. Gerbe, the USA Hockey’s National College Player of the Year and finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, lead the Eagles to the 2008 NCAA championship. He earned Most Outstanding Player at the Frozen Four after recording eight points, five goals and three assists in two games.

Gerbe was member of the United States hockey team in a number of international competitions including the 2004 and 2005 World Under-18 Championships and the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships.

This team is way too small to contend! Come on Management we need BIG bodies!

Doesn't really matter much. Until the Canes get rid of Cam Ward, they will be mediocre at best.

You are totally clueless.. How many Canes games have you watched?? Last year, till CAM went down, canes were 15-9-3 , 3rd in conference...

"GAA? I didn't realize he was a goalie. Considering every post you've made in this thread, I wouldn't expect you to know the difference. "

Yes, I know nothing at all about the sport of hockey because I mis-typed something and because I am not a Cam Ward fanboy. Numbers don't lie. Sucks that they really don't confirm your undying love of Ward or LaRose though...

He must be tough at this size--for sure. Still making solid money either way he goes.

Gerbe is the smallest player in the NHL. Hope he's tough enough to take the abuse he'll get.

HPX, you seem to be forgetting that the Canes have been in the Conference finals since we won... View More

I thought Ellis was that guy last season - good back up and at times he looked like he'd challenge Cam for ice time. Then Cam went down for the season, and we know how that turned out.
