Hurricanes Summerfest set for July 16-20 at PNC Arena

Posted May 21, 2013

— Ron Francis, Vice President of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced that the team will hold Hurricanes Summerfest – a mid-summer celebration of Hurricanes hockey – from July 16-20 at PNC Arena. Hurricanes Summerfest will focus around the team’s Prospects Development Camp and the inaugural ‘Canes Elite Players Camp where participants will receive instruction directly from Head Coach Kirk Muller and his staff of Rod Brind’Amour, Dave Lewis, John MacLean and Greg Stefan.

“Hurricanes Summerfest is a chance for the team and fans to enjoy a bit of hockey during the summer and look ahead to the coming season,” said Francis. “It combines the team’s existing summer events with our newly-designed Prospects Development Camp to create a fun-filled celebration of hockey.

“As part of Summerfest, we are excited to be able to offer for the first time both an Elite Players Camp and a Power Skating Clinic for exceptional young players, as well as a Coaches’ Clinic for coaches at any level. Kirk Muller and his staff will provide instruction at the Elite Camp and run the Coaches’ Clinic, and their experience and background will make these camps and clinics some of the best in the Southeast.”

The team’s Prospects Development Camp will see most or all of the Hurricanes’ 2013 draft class, other previously-drafted players and select invitees descend on Raleigh for a week of training. The camp’s on-ice sessions will be open to the public, and the week will wrap up with a game and skills competition on Saturday at noon as part of the Hurricanes Summerfest celebration. A complete roster and a detailed schedule for the Prospects Development Camp will be released in early July.

The inaugural ‘Canes Elite Players Camp will take place in conjunction with the Prospects Development Camp and is open to U-18, U-16 and U-14 AAA and AA players. Participants will use the NHL ice and facilities at PNC Arena, and will receive nearly-identical training and instruction from Hurricanes coaches and staff as do the players at the Prospects Development Camp.

Players in the U-12 AAA and AA, U-10 AA and U-8 advanced levels can register for the ‘Canes Power Skating Clinic, to be held from July 17-20 at PNC Arena. For one hour per day, participants will receive power skating instruction from elite skating coach Kim Muir. Muir has an extensive background that includes mentoring players from the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

From July 19-20, hockey coaches from all levels can learn directly from Muller and his staff at the inaugural ‘Canes Coaches’ Clinic. Muller will discuss the proper way to devise a practice plan, teach team systems and offer tips on implementing systems, while the team’s assistant coaches will focus on special teams.

Encompassed in Hurricanes Summerfest will be the team’s annual Select-A-Seat nights, when season-ticket holders choose their seats for the upcoming season. Hurricanes Summerfest will wrap up on Saturday, July 20, with a Summerfest celebration complete with more than 20 inflatables, games and other experiences, free giveaways, guest speakers and autograph opportunities with Prospects Development Camp players.
