Maurice didn't think Canes or Sens were good

It was a tough defeat for the Hurricanes last night in Ottawa.  I would be pretty perturbed if I had vested interest in the team.  Losing pretty badly (4-2) to a team that had 53 points coming into the game is unacceptable considering the situation.

One thing I have loved about coach Paul Maurice since he returned to Carolina's bench this season is his brutal honesty.  He simply pours the thoughts in his head right into the microphones in front of him, no holds barred.  That was made evident when he let an "S" bomb slip earlier this season at a live press conference.

He begins last night's press conference with a simple, "We got beat, that's it."  The sound of his voice suggested he hadn't a clue how his team couldn't find the back of the net more often with a 43-22 shot advantage.

"I mean we out shot them a ton we gave up four goals on 11 shots," Maurice said.  "We gave up some bad chances I didn't think they were that good I didn't think we were that good, that was it."

I love it.  How often do you hear the opposing coach that just lost to a team say they weren't that good?  But it was true.  Ottawa is not very good, and last night they were just "less bad" than the Canes were.  The third period was so boring I chose to watch President Obama talk about bringing this country out of the economic whirlwind.

Here is what the Canes would have with a win last night:

1. Sole position of second place in the southeast division.

2. 69 points (same as the Rangers) and seventh place in the Eastern Conference

3. A four game winning streak, and a five game road winning streak.

This team will look to start a new winning streak against Buffalo on Thursday night at home.  Mike Maniscalco explained nicely in the previous post that the loss didn't hurt too bad because Buffalo and Florida both lost as well.  But as he said, it would have been that much better to move forward when the rest fall behind.
